Hand Luggage/Handbag

Postby helen2904 » 23 Jul 2011 07:20

Hi can anybody clarify a small matter for me please. Can you actually take a small handbag aswell as your hand luggage that you check-in at the airport. I never know what to do whether to take a small handbag just for mobiles, tickets, passport etc. I have been going for many years but still can't really decide whether I could get away with taking a small handbag on my shoulder and not checking it in or not. Any ideas or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Helen

Hi Helen, your question has just put me in a bit of a tizz as I've not been on a plane in quite a few years (since before all the luggage weight/size restrictions came in) and now I don't know what to do! :?

I always used to have my across body handbag for all the important bits (passports, tickets, money etc) and normally a holdall/rucksack/cool bag full of bits and pieces that wouldn't go in the suitcase.

I too would be interested to know what is and is not permitted to be carried on board.

When are you going? We've got 4 weeks and 4 days, not that I'm counting.....

Hi Helen ,they will class your handbag as one piece of handluugage i always take a small bag just big enough for tickets, money phone ect.. the strap over the body type bag and i have never had any problems you can pick them up cheap from most shops ,primark are doing them for £5 at the mo, with handy little compartments that are perfect for those holiday bits n bobs .

I think the best way to be 100% sure and so as not to worry would be to contact the airline your travelling with, as all airlines/airports have different restrictions on what you can and can't take on board.
Gatwick let's you take a handbag as well as your hand luggage, but the actual carrier themselves, ie Th*****ns might not!
Better to be safe than sorry and get the correct information direct from who you're flying with/from!
Not saying that the people on this great forum don't know, as a lot of them do, but you might get the odd reply like "well I've always taken both and never been stopped" and If your like me, you'll be the one they do stop :-)

Wasn't a dig at you, or anyone for that matter :-)

I take a small cross body bag for passports, money etc, when checking in and going through security I put it in my bigger hand luggage bag. Then I take it out of bag and put it back on. This way you are only carrying one piece of hand luggage at checkin and means you dont have to put you passports & money into yhe overhead lockers while on the plane.

I put a handbag inside my handluggage and when we have gone through security I just take it out and carry it onto the plane

Agree with Chris though just check with the airlines website or call them to check.

I have always taken a handbag as well as hand luggage and only once had a problem and had to put handbag into hand luggage. This was at the height of the security crisis,

We are flying with EasyJet and I've just checked their T & C's with regard hand luggage and it definitely states 1 piece of hand luggage per passenger.

My son will need his own bag for his bits and pieces (ipod, phone, magazines etc) so I'll have to employ the method that many of you seem to use, take my handbag and put it into my hand luggage bag when going through check-in and security.

I'm glad I saw your question Helen as it also prompted me to check out our hold luggage allowance too. I've paid for 2 x 20k allowance but wasn't sure if we could mix'n'match, ie one bag with 30k and one with 10k or if it had to be 2 @ 20k each, luckily we can distribute the weight between the bags which is handy as we have a big suitcase and a small holdall.

Thanks for bringing this up :-)

Thank you for all your answers. I think I will chance it and take a small bag (across the body type) with me. Unfortunately I know that when I weigh the hand luggage they wil both be 5kg, (I am taking a Thomas the Tank train and track, and two Lego hellicopters in the hand luggage bags) (everytime we go to Icmeler my husband calls me Mother Christmas with all these presents for our friends ha ha ha) so I will not be able to put a small bag in our hand luggage.

Only three days to go!!!!!!!!! Thank you all again.

When I flew from Glasgow in June, there was someone at all arline checkins checking hand luggage, if you had a handbag you where told to only 1 peice of hand luggage allowed. You then had to put the handbag in the bigger bag, then if you were over 5kgs you got charged.

I take a small across the body bag which I just pop into my hand luggage until I get through to departures and then wear it :D

The "one item of hand luggage" rule is another complete rule of nonsense!! how many bags do you end up taking on the plane??? Well, that'll be one each for the spirits, fags, perfume, perhaps a bit of make up, or you've treated yourself to a new camera, 2 pairs of new shorts...... In any case I've never seen any blokes interrorgaged for having a bumbag AND hand luggage - surely a handbag is just the same as a bum bag??
