There are two kinds on kindles, one where you can connect to a WIFI and download straight from the amazon shop and the other where you can connect to 3GS if you don't have WIFI.
However you can download free books from the internet to your computer and then just transfer them over onto the kindle.
Its so easy once you get used to it. The battery lasts for ages I haven't charged mine for weeks and I have been reading for a couple of hours every night!
I'd say get one your wife with love it, you can now buy them from Tesco and then you just need to set up an amazon account and link them together.
