I am now drinking my own Russian Standard vodka and my supplies are dwindling
11 Jun 2011 14:00
Oh my goodness ! wont dare have a cheeky vodka ! will just have to bring out our own from duty free, and have a few before we come into town. effes sales will probably shoot up, but better safe than sorry
11 Jun 2011 14:37
Oh that is really bad - would be good to know how we know the fake stuff.
11 Jun 2011 16:03

I also would like to know how we spot the fake stuff, its bad enough after youve had a few trying to figure out if there is vodka in it or not

, looks like I might have to resort to cider then

is it safe to drink vodka in bars and restaurants then? surely they wouldnt be buying cheap fake vodka
11 Jun 2011 17:25
This has really worried me. I only like to drink vodka, might have 1 beer but couldn;t drink it all the time.
I am seriuosly thinking of not drinking at all but that would be so boring!!
The only other drink I like is milkshake!!
Seriuosly though, this could affect trade in the bars as people will be very wary, regardless of being reassured that its not fake
11 Jun 2011 19:18
You would think the longstanding regular bars and restaurants would make sure their alcohol is ok.I would if I was in their position. Hopefully
Icmeler being a lot smaller than the places Katie mentioned will be a lot more savvy. Not to make light of it we can all spend a lot more when we're alive than the alternative.I will take my chances with the vodka!

There are articles if anyone's interested on
http://en.rian.ru/analysis/20110608/164519676.htmlhttp://newspepper.su/news/2011/6/7/in-t ... e-alcohol/and
http://www.people.co.uk/news/uk-world-n ... -23180123/Very sad for the families of the people that were affected but if we take the advice of the tourism spokesman to only buy alcohol from licensed premises then we will be ok. There was a problem like this a few years ago apparently with with the Raki.
13 Jun 2011 14:56
none of the restaurant or bar owners know that the alcohol is fake when they buy it as its been disguised in the bottles
im not sure how you can tell its fake but unfortunately i dont think you can
i think russian tourists have been the ones mostly affected until now
hope this helps

How to spot fake alcohol
Ask to see the bottle
Spelling mistakes on the label
Bottles of the same product look different
Bottles not filled to same level
Label not straight
Smell of nail varnish
14 Jun 2011 15:28
thanks for your post erik but i think it is normal bottles of alcohol that have been produced by the correct manufacturers but are being stopped during transit and something else is being sneaked into the bottle
think thats why the police are having trouble tracking all the bottles down

I read it was a group who had stolen original manufacturers labels and were using those on their dodgy product so it was difficult to tell.

so do you think its best to steer clear of vodka or is it just a certain brand? omg will i have to go teetotal
14 Jun 2011 23:42
I don't know if vodka was involved but I read that whisky was. One article said
'According to the Turkish Agricultural Ministry, the Russians were poisoned by the counterfeit whiskey Mister Burdon, which was imported into Turkey from Northern Cyprus by the company Jasmine and sold by the Ankara-based Birlik Gida at the local market.'

Bet the Russians pushed their way to the front of the queue as well!
