i noticed quite a lot of these trees painted white, and for the life of me i cant think of a reason why, other than just decoration. can anyone enlighten me as to the reason? this picture was taken just last week.

A couple of possibilities and these are pure guesses.
Some type of pest control measure, maybe catepillars etc don't climb the tree because they don't like the paint.
White reflects the sun, maybe this helps the tree to retain water.
