Most banks will give you the local bank exchange rate (not tourist rate) at the time of the withdrawal. We got a better rate from the atm than was available locally, but you need to check with your bank what fees there is for international atm withdrawlas, because they can be a few quid per transaction. Your bank will be able to tell you. Have a lovely holiday :P

A lot of banks will charge you if you withdraw money from an ATM, even if you withdraw Sterling, some banks being worse than others. The only ones which don't have any loadings/ATM fees are Norwich & Peterborough, Santander Zero (not normal Santander) and Metro Bank.

The actual Visa/Mastercard rate (which banks use for their debit/credit cards) are the best you will find, just a shaving off the interbank rates. What makes the difference is what loading your bank takes off this rate and how much they charge for an ATM withdrawal.

Last year I had a bit of a problem with the HSBC atm on the square, i put my card in and it said there was an error reading chip !! Just for a few minutes i had a real sweat on !. I went to a turkish bank on main road, and took out lira, so catastrophe averted. Phew :D

We had same problem at HSBC in the square with machine saying it could not read chip although machine across the square could however would only give lira. This makes you think it is not sensible to rely on one card to get money!

I too have withdrawn sterling out of the HSBC machine in the square without any problem.
As an ex-bank worker I would like to confirm that the Bank do not make a charge. It is VISA the provider, who charge for the withdrawal. You will find this all over the world.
I was charge £2 for the withdrawal of £200 strerling, when I withdrew 300 TL I was charges £2.19.
Hope this helps.

As a current bank worker I can confirm it is most definitely the bank that charges NOT Visa.

I have just had my bank statement in and I was not charged anything for withdrawing English notes from HSBC in the square using Bank of Scotland Visa card. I was however charged for each transaction on my credit card so it will be cash for me from now on.

That's right, they only have a foreign currency charge, not a foreign ATM charge.
