A question about currency

23 May 2011 13:55

Can anyone let me know what the exchange rate is like in resort. Not sure whether to bring sterling and exchange, or just withdraw cash as and when needed. Travelex are offering 2.47 today.

Many thanks

Hi - checked with owner of apartments where we are staying and his exchange rate is currently 2.5 lira to the pound so I know I would be able to get it better in some supermarkets /restaurants etc. Depends how soon you are going as rate might go down as season gets into full swing. If you change stirling ot travellers cheques you will not be charged comission. Be aware however that if you draw cash out of ATM your bank will probably charge you and also exchange rate will be that in the UK on day your transaction goes through. Hope this helps - have a good holiday.

I would take a certain amount of lira with you just to get going, then change the rest of your cash in the resort, as you wil get a better rate there. That's what we normally do, and also take some cards with us as a back-up.

Many thanks. We are with Nationwide who used to not charge so always just drew it out as we went, we also found them to be a good rate but since that has changed we're going back to cash in that case.

We go next Thursday.

M&S travel money 2.5 today, just ordered mine online

That's good - do you recommend Sterling Travellers cheques?

Re: A question about currency

I don't think TC are as popular as they once were.

We usually take about £50 in TL and change the rest as and when whilst we are there.

Although you don't get as much for your money, Cash Sterling is also widely accepted :)

Re: A question about currency

I'm mainly thinking of security by taking travellers cheques - can you still get them exchange as if they were sterling cash?

You can change cheques as if cash, for the first time you will need your passport, then if you are using the same place just the passport number. You will get the same rate as cash, but remember, Sterling Cheques and DO NOT USE Exchange offices, they take commission. We take £50/£100 Lira, Travellers Cheques and maybe £100/200 for any barter bargains.

You can exchange travellers cheques at numerous places, the supermarket next to Tandoori Sizzler, many bars possibly your apartments, where are you staying and have you been to Icmeler before??

Hi Sooze
Take a look at this link.
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8& ... 8e86a260a2 you will find your aparts on there, you will also find many bars/resturants that the forum mention, from your apartments towards the main square you will pass a supermarket called Best, members say that this one also gives a Very Good rate. (it is opposte the Babadan aparts, near Azra jewellers) you will also find Tandoori Sizzler.
Hope this is of use
Steve

Many thanks, I've been struggling to find apartment on here, found Club Sun Village and I believe we're just around the corner. Have made a note of Tandoori Sizzler as it looks good.

Thanks again

Hi there I always take sterling travellers cheques for safety more than anything, wouldn't want to carry a lot of cash around with me or leave in the safe!

As Steve has said avoid the Exchange offices and find a local little supermarket near where you are staying. I'm staying at the Selen Apartments and have used the little supermarket under the apartments for the last couple of years. Its the same rate as cash etc.

Happy Holidays!!

Also avoid the banks when changing Travellers Cheques, last year they started charging a set fee per TC.
