Maps and Guide Books

28 Apr 2011 13:19

Hi All

Last year we were able to vist a nice little place called Akyaka by local transport. We took a Dolmus to Marmaris, got on the wrong coach, went straight past Akyaka and ended up in Mugla (where people speak very little English, and why should they?) We managed to finally get a Dolmus back to Akyaka and had a very enjoyable time there. At about 16.00 Hrs we got the Dolmus back to Marmaris and then on to Icmeler to enjoy a relaxed evening chatting about our day. all in all a very good experience.

I am not sure how we found out about Akyaka, possibly in a restaurant or a chance conversation, but we are really glad we did.

Which brings me to my question. Are there any local maps and / or guide books available that would have the relevant information to enable us to have more days out like this?

John

Hi John.
We too went to Akyaka. What a beautiful little place, and how friendly the people there. We heard about Akyaka through one of the travel offices. We got took there and back by taxi...which was very nice and not really that expensive as there were 5 of us. Whilst there, we even picked up a couple of 'minders' for the day in the canine form. Absolutely brilliant, as they followed us everywhere all day long and wouldn't let anyone near us. They even followed hubby to the loo and sat outside waiting for him. Noone else could get in. We have visited there for the past 2 years now, and will most definitely be going back there again this year.
Anyway, back to your question regarding maps ect. It maybe worth while visiting the information centre outside the L'etoile Hotel. Nazan, the young lady who was working there last year was most helpful.
Hope this has been of some help.

Hi John
I am going to give Akyaka a try as my husband and I like to get off the beaten track. A suggestion for you:) We take the bus from Marmaris to Orhania. It is more developed now than when we first went but worth a visit, nevertheless. Go beyond the place where the bus and jeep trips stop and you will find a little wooden pier where the locals fish, a couple of small bars where you will get a meal or snack. Enjoy.

Wow! I had no idea that these places existed : Akyaka, Gypsy beach or Orhania. Perhaps it is because we have been blinkered and not travelled far once we reach icmeler (boat trips, marmaris and Turunc usually). I will definatley need to do some homework on these places and any further information would be greatly appreciated. If people take the time to recommend them even with icmelers beauty, then they must be good!
