Prickly Heat - ouch!

Hi All - anyone got tips on how to avoid prickly heat rash

I had to take Benydryl last year, as I get it really bad and it's all red and lumpy and itchy.

Still need something that stops it before it starts though?

I got this when i went over in May. It got really bad that i just wanted to cry so my mum went to the pharmacy for me and they gave me lots of anti histomin (cant spell sorry) creams which i had to rub together and put on, then gave me tablets aswell that i had to have once a day after food. The tablets worked a treat because i put the cream on, but one of them was oil based so wouldnt rub in properly and i only kept it on for half an hour. A cold shower helps aswell. If you gte it make sure you stay in the shade, this helps aswell

I suffer really bad from this for years, out came the sun out came the prickly heat. I tried all sorts of things and only one thing worked, a course of sunbeds before I go away. I still get prickly heat from the sun beds but mild, then when I go away it seems to keep itself in check.I know a lot of people dont like sunbeds but few sessions once a year has got to be worth it to stop all that itching.

I find using piz buin for sensitive skins or nivea for sensitive skins sun tan lotion works for me.

My Nan has suffered for donkeys' years from prickly heat. It doesn't even have to be that hot and she gets it. On getting it in Cyprus a couple of years ago, she went to a chemist there who said that it could be due to an allergy to the sun tan lotion and/or the fat that the sun tan lotion is oily- when the skin sweats all the sweat is trapped under the lotion and consequently can't escape, this leads to blocked pores and pricly heat (as well as sweat rashes.) She now uses Piz Buin as it is oil free and, fingers crossed, is ok. Unfortunately, this stuff is expensive, but as of a couple of weeks ago, this was on either buy 1 get 1 free or half price at Superdrug.

Both Me and my MBH suffer abit from this. I Googled it and got about the same explanation as B&W stripes. Last year, after sunbathing etc and when we were showering we used a Loofah to really clear the pores of all the residues of suntan. We didn't have a trace of Prickly heat all the time in Icmeler. Hope this helps as it can be quite uncomfortable

Piz Burn is the best its oil free so does not bock your pores make sure you buy the oil free one

I just take something like piriton whilst i'm on holiday and the prickly heat stays away. It's horrible though suffering, and i get it on my shins and it gets really sore if i don't take something to get rid of it.

Yeah you can Col, it also stops any bites that you may get from itching and swelling. Mind when you get home and stop taking it the bites make their presence felt.

Victoria - does taking anti histamine daily for 10 days before you go away and during your holiday really stop it coming on?
If so, I'll certainly be trying that before I go in August. I get it on my chest - horrible!

Thanks everyone for your replies, I now have a plan of action -

a course of sunbed sessions before I go;
antihistamines for 10 days prior to holiday;
antihistamines whilst I'm there;
use Piz Buin (oil free) lotion;
use a loofah to clear the pores.

and if it does take hold - COLD SHOWERS brrrrr

That was a bit tounge in cheek I know, but I think I will use antihistamines and Piz Buin (oil free) lotion. As for clearing my pores, I can think of something far more enjoyable than a loofah, a really fab TURKISH BATH on the first day, another half way through my hol and again before going home. Anyone know of a good Turkish Bath that finishes off with an aromatherapy massage in Icmeler?[/b]

ive done it for several years now Collette and never any more bother. its only a very small dose daily compared to the recommended 3 times a day for allergies. i ususally start about 7 days before holidays and stop about midweek during the first week.

ahh right so its just one dose a day going to try it this year as prickly heat looks so red and unsightly on me

try betacarotene you can get it from places like holland & barrett. You need to start taking it before you go about 4 weeks if possible and carry on while you are there. It really works well.

Oh, Piriton! I don't know what it's like for Prickly Heat, but I cannot praise this wonderful stuff highly enough when it comes to having Chicken Pox. I was unfortunate enough to get this when I was 11 and, as with most childhood diseases, the older you are when you get them the more ill you are. My Mum's friend bought me the medicine and it was amazing! It stopped the pain (my Chicken Poxes did not itch, they just hurt) and I could even tell when it was time for my next dose as the effects were wearing off. If you want to take any medicine, take this, if that is the effect is has on CP, you may as well try it for Prickly Heat (and anything else!)

My daughter gets prickly heat very bad.Our doctor recommended that she took Piriton for 2 weeks before we went and then every day while we are away have been doing this for the last 3 years and she is never bothered with prickly heat when we are away now.
