Wheeled Holdall Recommendation Required

PostPosted: 17 Mar 2010 09:57

With the reduction of our weight allowance from 20KG to 15KG per person I am looking at changing my luggage to reduce weight.

We are a family of four (Including two teenage daughters) currently use two large family suitcase which when packed hold 30Kg each and a smaller suitcase which holds 20KG, we now have to loose 20Kg so my first attack is to replace the large suitcases with lightweight wheeled holdalls as each family suitcase is 6KG empty.

My problem is there are so many on the market, I need two cases with between 120-140 litres of capacity each, does anyone have any recommendations.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Have you looked in Argos yet? We got 2 wheeled holdalls last year in their sale, which weighed much less than our old suitcases. Aslo we bought some vacum bags from the local Pound shop, which when the air is taken out, to help slightly with the weight...plus there is more room :D

There are loads on argos, loads of different sizes and makes. Most of them have reviews too so you can check out how strong they are before you buy them

We have also been looking for a lighter luggage option. Notice matalan are doing very lightweight cases weighing barely 2kg, wee bit pricey at around £40 but may come on offer soon! Hope this is off some use to you!! :D

Re the vacuum bags, what do you do on the way back cos thats when I have problems fitting everything back into my holdall?

I bought the £9.99 one out of Argos 2 years ago and its great, have had 4 holidays out of it so far. Not sure about how waterproof it is so I pack things into scented bin liners, eg. all daytime tops together, all swimwear together etc, then when you get there its just a matter of lifting the bundles out and putting in drawers - easy, peasy!

Hi Dotty
Re vacum bags on the way home. We borrow the hotels vacum. It was real fun last year trying to get the cleaner to understand because she didn't speak ant English bless her, so we had to go to reception, speak to the reception manager, who then in turn relayed what we required onto the cleaner. She looked on in a bemused state whilst she watched us suck the air out of the bags with her beloved hoover. At least she will remember why we want to borrow it in October

I have used a Samsonite wheeled duffel bag for some years now. Light but very strong. I certainly recommend it.

Re vacuum bags you can squeeze the air out of them which is what we have done to put summer clothes in them for this year just as good as using a vacuum cleaner to suck the air out (only know this as our vacuum cleaner overheated when I tried it  ).

Hi - there are two types. The "normal" vacuum bags which need a vacuum cleaner to be effective and the "travel" bags which are designed to be rolled. I normally take the latter but they had been used for so many years that they'd worn out and this year (as I'm travelling to the same hotel at the same time as Starchild01) I've bought the vacuum ones from Poundland and intend to wheedle the cleaning lady into borrowing hers - failing that I'll be knocking on your door on departure day Starchild01 LOL!!

This is similar to the one we got about 3 years ago, we've had about 4 holidays out of it so far and it's still going strong.
