shortage of the Turkish Lira in England

Postby lynnep » 22 May 2014 15:19

Iv'e just been to 3 places in our town Tesco, Dawson & Sanderson & a exchange shop & not one of these had any Turkish Lira & was not able to order any as the banks are not releasing them would this be to bring the exchange rate down as it is still pretty good at the moment i could get 3.35 TL if they could have got some. they say there is a shortage of them. Could anybody out there throw some light on this situation please Also what is the exchange rate in Icmeler at the moment?

I was told off one of my local travel agents that the turkish government had put a hold on releasing lira to European countries for the moment as they are rewriting some regulations? Once this is done they will start to release it to other countries again. Not sure how correct this info is but that is what she told me in the travel agents when i asked what was gone on with the lira. Some places still have some lira left as it is stock that they have had left from before this started

The lira was only unavailable for a few days. Today the rate with travelfx (when ordering £500+) is 3.313. Their rate is usually the best, today though, this is also the rate with ice but unusually it is higher with the Post Office online at 3.322 with free delivery for £400+. I keep a regular check on http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/ and travelfx.co.uk

Like a lot of people I got a shed load of lira at end of January when rate was up at around 3.8. Most of these people have not been on holiday yet so all that lira has not been used, so turkish government not releasing anymore until we have spent it all over there. Hope this makes sense
