Travellers Cheques Being Fazed Out? Is This True?

Postby Chris221273 » 01 Aug 2012 09:45

Hey all,
Anita's just been to post office to ask about commission prices on T/Cheques and they said they are being fazed out and replaced with these money cards.
They told her to take dollars or Euros as changing cheques is a nightmare, which all those who use them in icmeler know is rubbish.
Are there any benefits to using these cash cards? And do you get a lower rate from taking lira out of a cash machine or can you draw out sterling?
Thank you.

Hi Chris,
Just been on Post Office site, no mention of cheques being fazed out, only a New currency being added. I think they are just trying to promote the card. :x Take a look at M&S they only charge 1% commision or better still check your bank,,, My account has No commision charge on cheques and Free Travel Insurance.

What bank you with Steve? We're with Lloyds, but couldn't see online if they charged or not!

If you order cheques online with lloyds Tsb it's free and you pick them up from the branch. I think they try and get them before 1pm the next day. You have to pay if you want them sent to your home.

I've searched and I cannot find any news about TC's being fazed out so I think you have been given duff info.

I don't like the money cards as they are too easliy swallowed by ATM's and then you have issues.

Hi Chris, I have an Advantage Gold with Natwest, I'm sure other banks do similar, I pay X amount per month this gives Free phone insure, Car breakdown, Free Travel Insure, No Commision on travel money or cheques, etc. for less than I would pay other company's. Just ask at your bank.

Hi dave, I think you're right.
Anita visited 3 post offices yesterday, and they all gave different information.
The last one she went to is run by a friend of hers, and she said they're told to say travellers cheques are being fazed out, as they get more commission selling the money cards!!!
She enquired about travel insurance, and again, all 3 gave different answers!
Good to see they train their staff well aye!!!

When we went in June we were told shop owners were being charged more commission to cash the cheques themselves so weren't keen on taking them.
