Jewellers and haggling

Postby smc4761 » 22 May 2010 11:52

The lovely mrs smc4761 wants to buy some jewllery this year. I assume that you also need to haggle in the jewellers and if so what seems to be the going rate, eg at the start price do I then offer say 50/60 % of this and then eventually meet about 75 %. I hate haggling

Hi

I normally start about 50% of what they are asking then meet somewhere in the middle depends on what you are buying if its a few bits you may get a decent discount
Start by having an idea of how much you want to pay sometimes I will have the amount am willing to pay in cash and if negoitations stop show them the cash say thats all you have 9 time out of 10 they will do the deal

they're a pain the jewellers. What prices are on the goods are in dollars. Plus you cant stop long enough to have a look i always hope that there's other people before me so they do the hard sell on them and it gives me chance to look in peace.

If you have an idea of the cost of something over here it helps you. 14ct gold is softer than 9ct so it will rub against a 9ct ring.

I once asked to look at bracelets for about £50 said it was for a teenager and wanted a flexible clasp type, so what did they bring out every garish very expensive chunky bracelet under the sun not one for about £50.

i'd start of at half what they ask and be prepared for a very long session in the shop. And stick to your budget. I'm not good at bartering with the jewellers so if you walk in with X amount and that only no cards etc then they know what you have to spend.

I'm after getting my eternity ring made into something else this year as i've lost one of the diamonds so will go to the smaller little jewellers on the side roads hopeing they may be a tad cheaper.

I think the posher and bigger the shop the dearer they are. If i could be bothered i would try and price match a couple but its the 3 hours of negotiation out of your hols I couldnt be bothered with.

Good luck its an experience.

good luck its an experience as people have said to haggle with the jewellers
go with your instinct
if something looks expensive then it probably is
as long as you think your getting a good price for something then you should be ok
but do haggle cause they are chancers :P
