I have just been to get some sterling travellers cheques from M&S and they tell me that I will be charged upto 16% commission when exchaging in Turkey. Does anyone know if this is the case or where they on a sales pitch. Any advice welcome. Many thanks in advance.

You will not pay any commission in any of the local supermarkets or as far as i know the banks, but you will in the exchange shops

The guy in M&S said "to change your sterling travellers cheques into Lira in Turkey, we would be charged upto 16% commission so the M&S staff had been informed" -
Thanks for your replies. Will try the supermarket you have mentioned.

Never been charged commission on changing traveller cheques in the small supermarkets or banks, but be careful with the exchange shops, they have tried when I first went in 2002.

We changed some of our travellers cheques at the exchange office and were charged a commission not 16% though!!The rest we changed at the supermarket under
icr offices and were not charged anything.

seems that good old M&S although good intentions have got it wrong - unless of course they were referring to the exchange shops
have to say we never used them and always either change them at the
hotel next door to us [on the odd occasion when we do take them]
more often than not, we take good old £££ notes and change them in the supermarkets
am a bit wary in these days of ID hijacking, so try to avoid giving my passport number unless I really have to

We always get out travellers cheques from M&S and have never had a problem or been charged commission. Did you get stirling travellers cks or euro. I believe some places do charge for euro cks.
