1st time to icmeler in aug is the rate better in turkey or am i better of bringing lira with me.....

Re: holiday money

Will be a better rate in resort so just take the majority of your money in travellers cheques. Might be a good idea to take a small amount of lira with you for when you first arrive as you may want to buy water on the coach ect.

I agree, we have found that if you get 2.2 to the £ here, you more likely to get 2.4-2.5 in Icmeler, doesnt sound much but when you change a large amount it adds up :D

Re: holiday money

Re: holiday money

definately, also got piece of mind not having vast amounts of cash. You will find the small supermarkets will give a much better rate than the banks too.

Never had a problem changing Travellers Cheques at the small supermarkets, one did try to give me lower rate. I tend to use the BEST supermarket opposite Romance restaurant, he always gives a good rate and its the same for cash or TC's

We only take about 50-100 lira, depending how much was left from the previous holiday, and a few hundred pounds in sterling for shopping. Apart from that I use my Nationwide Flexi Account, which has no charge for withdrawals in Turkey. We have always had a better exchange rate when I see the statement that what was offered in any of the supermarkets or bars.

If the bar is offering 2.3, I know I will probably be getting nearer to 2.4, because you get the international bank exchange rate.

I also use my Nationwide account. As the previous poster put, i tend to get a better rate when i get home and check my bank statements. However as my dad is giving us some spends this year too we will have that in travellers cheques so i'll have a combination of the two.
The supermarket under the ICR office will change travellers cheques no problem, my BIL took stirling travellers cheques last year and got the same rate at the people who were changing cash. After the first couple of times of changing the travellers cheque he didn't need his passport as the shop owner remembered him.

My mam uses her Nationwide account to withdraw sterling while we're in Icmeler then change it into lira to get the best exchange rate, cos even the Turkish cash machines have lower rate than the supermarkets, hotels, etc.

Enjoy your holiday :D
