Not that I want to worry anyone or start a panic!
But today I was told by someone who works in the travel industry that Turkey will be joining the Euro from May this year. I can't see if myself but just wanted to check they are wrong. Has anyone else heard this or is it a load of rubbish??

I think they must of been pulling your leg, considering Turkey is still not part of the EU and I although it may happen one day I don't see it being as soon as May. I wouldnt panic.

The day they become the Euro is the day I will explore new places, one of the reason amongst many others is that it is out of the Euro zone, we usually go to Spain for a week once a year and we can spend there in a week what we spend in
Icmeler for 2 weeks.

I think they have a long way to go before they get into the EU if ever. To be honest I don't know why they even want to join, they are indipendant and if they join they will be anserable to those idiots in Brussels.

Only countries who are already in the EU and have the finances required by the EU are eligible to have the euro as their currency.....so that rules Turkey out.And for the foreseeable future,at least until the Cyprus problem is resolved.Like the rest of the posters I am very happy for the Turkish Lire to continue!Although we hardly ever use it, most of the businesses in
Icmeler are happy to take sterling, euros whatever you've got really.I'm wondering as well what travel industry they are in?

People in the travel industry especially 90% or more of the ones that sell you holidays know more about deep sea exploration than the travel industry or the places they sell

There's a long painful process of bringing a country's economy & laws into line with the EU before it can join. Some of the recent accession countries, like Poland, still haven't joined the Euro which suits me fine for my visits there. This is quite apart from the special considerations that Turkey raises.

There are 27 countries in the EU, out of those 16 countries use the Euro, the other 11 either have decided not to use the Euro (eg UK, Denmark) or are not eligible to use the Euro due to the country finances, I doubt Turkey will be able to join the Euro for some time to come, first step is to join the EU but they still have a lot to do getting there economy straight and stable as well as inflation rates down first.
Regarding the Greek debt all they need to do is to sell the Greek side of Cyprus to Turkey, this resolves two issues, the Cyrpriot question and Greece's balance of payments, this would accelerate Turkeys entrance to the EU as the cyrpiot question is the major stumbling block on memership, I can't see it happening though and if it did happen I could see another Northern Ireland, ireland situation happening.
I'm glad I'm not a politician.

Thanks Guys
I knew they didn't know what they were talking about but just had to ask to be certain! The person who told me works in a travel agent, I just hope they aren't telling the customers who want to book to go to Turkey as it might put them off especially first timers.

I've never heard such a load of rubbish since......................well..................since my boss came to have a word with me this morning, but I digress.
The only thing that might be possible, is that Turkey has decided to attempt to peg the lira to a certain euro rate, but I haven't heard this.
