A very SAD story

Postby Colette » 12 Oct 2009 14:58

It broke my heart when I saw this happen infront of my eyes

I was in The Gondol chatting to Ollie on a SUNDAY and there was a few people in there, one was an elderly man sitting watching the football on the TV.

There rep came in and he got up, she said no Jimmy your on the later flight, so he sat back down again.

A lovely lady from Belfast came over to chat to us and I mentioned him, she said do you not know what happened, well I said no , just thought he was watching the TV

It turned out he was 83 ( I think ) and he had arrived with his daughter on the Sunday previous. His daughter had skin cancer and was none to well, so she had a wheel chair and he used to push her up and down the canal, on the Monday, she felt unwell and went the doctors / hospital who did some tests, and wrote something on her chart. Then sent her home.

On the Tuesday she had a fall, Ollie from The Gondol called the ambulance and they went off to hospital, she died later that day. The poor man Jimmy was obviously devastated, he was now out there alone with no one. His rep from the travel company came and said there were no flights for him to go home, and nothing they could do.

Poor Jimmy sat in The Gondol from WEDNESDAY till the following SUNDAY alone every day, while his Travel Company did nothing for him. He phoned his family and said he was ok so they didn't go out to him either. Thank you to everyone in the apartments who helped him, made sure he ate and looked after him. Also to the very lovely irish lady who was just on hols in Icmeler at the time , who also went to visit him and hug him every day.

I never heard when they flew his daughters body home but I was told it was not on the same flight as he went on, which might I add was the flight they BOTH should on flown home on together.

Jimmy may your lovely daughter Helen RIP and I hope one day you may re visit Icmeler in her memory, if anyone has heard of anything else about this please let me know.

To his travel comany, shame on you, your a disgrace.

RIP Helen :( :(

How sad the travel company and rep should be ashamed of themselves. My thoughts are with Jimmy. Thank goodness there are some people out there that care (the lovely irish lady) and the staff at The Gondol

Brings the heartless b******s to shame. Excuse my French, but that's absoloutley awful.

Anyone with a heart would of done everything their can to get this guy home. Words cannot describe what he must of been going through, especially at his age too.

I would certainly make a complaint to the travel company even if it wasn't the person complaining because that's atrocious treatment.

R.I.P Helen and my heart goes out to Jimmy.

My heart goes out to Jimmy. A few years ago while we were on holiday with a well known travel co my sisters partner died suddenly. For obvious reasons we wanted to get home asap but the rep was saying that there were no flights to scotland but we could go to heathrow gatwick etc. As soon as we mentioned that we'd pay for our flights hey presto 11 flights to Scotland suddenly became available. The reps where hopeless but the spanish were superb. Never again will we ever use th******.

Rip Helen and our best wishes to Jimmy. x

He was offered a flight to Heathrow but would have been stuck there as he was from Glasgow.

Please don't turn this into a travel company bashing though I posted the story as it was something I wanted to share with you all that was personal from my holiday. My dad is around the same age and as you all know I go away with my parents each year, and dread to think of them going through anything like that.

I will post this on a few sites so will let you know if I hear anything else :)

Im sorry to hear of what happened and disgusted that this man was treated in such an insensitive manner, but so glad that he was staying at the Gondol when it happened. Ollie, family and staff would have been distressed by this customers situation, but would have done everything they could have to ensured he wanted for nothing. Im sure a friendly face and someone to listen would have been much appreciated by this old man and im sure his family will have thought the same. jacqui

Maybe the old man just wanted to wait and travel home with his daughter to know that she will arrive safely at the same time as him.

It is a extremely sad sorry story indeed. :(

My thoughts are with you Jimmy. The thought of somebody leaving my grandad stranded makes my blood boil. He passed away 25.09.09 my grandad but was my best friend as well as my grandad. I am so sorry to hear of Jimmy being treated like this but am happy to hear there were some caring people around to help!!!

RIP Helen, RIP Grandad.

This story really made my blood boil  , it also brought back memories of a few years ago but for exactly the opposite reason. While we were on holiday our friends were waiting for the news of the birth of their grandchild, the call comes that baby has arrived and both mother and baby are well, drinks all round. Then the worst happened, without anyone realising and within 48 hours, the babies mother suffered the worst and most drastic form of post natal depression and during the night she took her own life. At the time we were travelling with Manos staying at the Hotel 47 and the hotel management and holiday Rep could not do enough, everyone rallied round. The reason I have mentioned this is that like every walk of life there are good and bad, some people will go out of their way to help in drastic circustances while pthers will just pay lip service. My heart goes out to Jimmy and his family. Rip sweet lady.
