Travellers Cheques or Sterling?

Postby MistySunshine » 20 Jun 2009 17:18

Hi,
Just wondering is it better to take travellers cheques or sterling and change it at the bank?
Also does anyone know the approximate rates for both in resort? :D
Thanks for reading xx

We never take travellers cheques, just Nationwide Flexi Account which is free to withdraw and sterling which we change in the bank.

HI

you should get the same rate wether you use cash or sterling travellers cheques it is best to change them in the small supermarkets as they will give you the best exchange rate and the donot charge a commission at the moment the interbank rate is approx 2.57TL to the £ so you should get about 2.50 in the supermarkets

Last week I got 2.50 and 2.51 in the bank, but only 2.45 in the small supermarkets, and there was no commission for Sterling.

Yes we only take sterling too but since we live in Scotland we have to change our perfectly good money for English notes as most places wont accept Scottish in Turkey ....... come to that most places in England wont take Scottish either ? very strange since we are one country !

We always take cash but have to order it from the bank to make sure we get English so we have to change our money twice !

And never bother with travellers cheques now feel they are too much hassle ...

travelers cheques

Postby fatblokecaver » 21 Jun 2009 14:08

We always taketravellers cheques only because worst case senario they can be replaced within 24 hours. I would dread to think what would happen if you loost your card or were pickpocketed!!! Yes they can be a pain in the wotsit what with having to show your passport but after a few exchanges the change offices and supermarkets just seem to know your face. We can also change them at our acomodation.

Hi
We take a mix of Travelers checks for security, Sterling for bartering and in case the atm,s are out of sterling, and use
Nationwide flex account with two cards, always got other cards for emergencies but get charged on these.
Don`t want anything to spoil holidays do we??

We use a Nationwide flex account and withdraw from the ATM's. We have a joint account, so if I lost my card, hopefully we'd still be able to get cash out.

I imagine it would be a heck of a sight worse if you had a passport pickpocketed.

Sheepy
We photocopy passport and keep it in the case, then you have all details at hand.

l'm with the Nationwide and used my card in resort last year, this year l'm taking cash as per usual because l'm pretty sure the Nationwide are now charging like the other banks and building societies. I might be wrong but its prob better to check before you leave :D

I take a bit of everything - sterling, lira, bank cards but the majority of my spends is in Travellers Cheques for safety. It's never any hassle changing them at the supermarket underneath ICR offices, you get the same exchange rate and you don't even need to take your passport, just remember to write your passport number of the reverse.
