When Turkey becomes a member of the euro market .About 2010 I think

There is nothing definate yet when Turkey could become a member of the EU.

I believe the EU have told Turkey they cannot enter Europe untill they pull out of Cyprus. So don't hold your breath.
Stick with the good old English Pound and Turkish Lira on holiday.

Personally I woudn't go to a country that is involved in the euro.

It is very expensive anywhere the euro is used.

Turkey has not even had its accession talks yet and after that you are talking at least 10 years before they are allowed in

Most Turkish people you speak to in the resorts will tell you they don't want to go into Europe. This is because they know prices will go up and thier trade will drop.
Even in Tenerife which isn't even officially Spain we saw prices double after the Euro.
Yes there has been a slight increase but that is more than made up by the good things (too many too mention).
Please don't take Euro's to Turkey, they won't thank you for it!

Hi all haven't posted for a long time but have been watching just the same. It might be better not to get into the politics of the Lira/Euro or even when Turkey will join the EU. As someone else mentioned an agreement has to be reached between Northern Cyprus and Southern Cyprus before Turkey can be considered for full membership.
If EU membership gives stability to the currency and the country then it cant be all that bad. You can spend most currencies in Turkey anyway so what does it matter.
Just enjoy the holiday and leave the politics to the politicians.

yes people go to turkey because its cheap and they love the turkish people.but when they go euro,it will do there tourism in. thats why most turks dont want it.and i dont blame them.iv been going to turkey for 13 years but when they go euro i wont bother going,because the euro has spoilt everywhere else. steve

Don't really think anyone was getting into the politics. Merely stating, as seasoned travellers, how we have seen prices increase where the Euro is implemented.
I only mentioned the Cyprus issue as a statement of a well documented issue to give a time scale and did not comment on the wrong or right of it.

So prices have not gone up in Turkey then over the past 13 years!! The country has had one of the worst inflation rates in the World and it is nowhere near the Euro yet!! If it joins Europe it will give the country some stability and also it will not be a major contributor, so will benefit from massive European support

Norman, norman, you sound like a budding politician, a holiday in brussels for you. Visit euroland, and ask he public what they think now.

Changing the subject according to todays exchange rate, icmeler online are saying there are 264tl to the pound.
Surely this is not right, according to the newspapers the rate is about 226.

Personally I wouldnt depend on the opinion of the French, love them to bits but they are even more bolshy than the British so they will complain about anything. All I was saying was that Turkey has got even more expensive over the last 10 years I have been going there and it has got nothing at all to do with the Euro. But irrespective about what people think of the EU and yes it has got expensive in Europe, the whole question revolves around what benifits will Turkey get from joining Europe. I think, and it is only my opinion, it will do Turkey nothing but good. and if that is good for the country and the Turkish people then so be it. Also irrespective about what happens, it will not influence me one way or the other when choosing a destination for a holiday.
Turkey is a wondeful place, and it has very friendly peolple, friends for life not just for holidays.
