We have read in a current guide book that atrack/path used by the locals goes over the hill roughly following the coast and takes about 4 hours. Is this true?

We agree with Donna and Ken, walk   not on your life. You would probably spend the rest of your hols in hospital suffering for exhaustion, I am worn out just at the thought.
