Icmeler Online Holiday Forum & Reviews - Turkey

One of The trips we did last year was to a little town on ther Bozburun Peninsular called Akyaka.
It was only an hour from Icmeler and on the way we stopped at a couple of rock tombs from days gone.

Arriving in Akyaka was as I imagined it, a beautifull little village with this magnificent backdrop of mountains.
Having an harbour area and the Azmac river running into the bay over which river is a rustic wooden bridge,this has got to be a photographers paradise.
Fish restaurents lined the pretty promenade and one step and you were on to the beach area, were sunbeds and brollies were in abundence.
2 beds and 1 brolly 4ytl.
The beach shelved gently into the sea and you could walk out 150mtrs before having to swim,this was great for Andre and he loved jumping and diving into the waves.
We left Akyaka at 3.30 arriving Icmeler 4.30,oh I wish we had that beach and sea at Icmeler.
Then they havent got any "3 Bells" "Lion Bar" "Majestic Boys" etc, or do they actualy desire them? I think not,this is a resort for those who like peace and tranquilityand that is what reigns in this Turkish resort.

Looking through the list of Excursions that ICR do as well as the jeep safaris why not try The Gokova Bay Trip or THe Cleopatras Island trip.

Gokova Bay covers the magnifcent scenery of the gulf of Gokova whom Jaques Cousteue rates the pristine condition of the sea and beaches as the finest in Europe.
Visit English Harbour were boats off the English Fleet used to hide during the war.
Take photographs of the little mermaid a small sculptor in such a vast sea.
The scenery round this area is stunning so please take your cameras

Cleopatras Island A gift to Cleopatra from Mark Anthony.
White sands, old ruins,
Some people say three and a half hours is to long to spend here,
How long would you like to spend in Heaven.

I would reccomend taking plenty of water with you although I do understand that a cafe is on the Island.

DATCA.

one of the nicest places I have had the fortune to visit.

Leaving Icmeler and heading towards the Bozburun Peninsular it took one and an half hours through winding roads and picturesque villages,driving over a mountain range where to to one side was the Bay of Marmaris and to the other the Bay of Bodrum.
Onward we travelled till we came accross DATCA.
A true Turkish town whos market meandered through the quaint streets and not one bit of hassle.
Tree lined promenades with bars and restaurents suiting all tastes.

Boasting two beaches,an harbour and first class country park as well as my favourite 10 white ducks swimming in the sea,
DATCA is most certainly a place I intend to make a repeat visit.

I loved reading Gene's review of Akyaka, and hope to go there this year. I dont do boats, get terrible sea sickness, even although I tried the Turkish tablets to stop it. Was ill after 10 mins on a boat last year! Spoiled my whole day and I so wanted to enjoy it too. So reading about the places that are not too far away by bus interests me. It's good to know how long it takes etc, as my kids would not behave on a long bus journey so this kind of information is invaluable to me! Gene's reviews are so descriptive too!

For those who dont wish to spend a full day out on the boats but would like to do something different and spend a little time on the briny,why not do the twenty minute trip by taxi boat to either Marmaris or Turunc.
Both in opposite directions to each other,

Marmaris,
with its narrow beach,bustling promenade,streets and squares,
its castle and picturesque harbour area.
Here also you will find the big supermarkets,Macdonalds and you can also catch the Dolmus from Marmaris that will take you to other regions of Mugla.

Turunc,
A world apart from Marmaris,boasting a nice harbour area and small picnic park,a narrow promenade running the full length of the bay lined with cafes bars and hotels.
Sunbeds are free along here as long as you use the facilities of the cafe
whose beds you lay on.
Lovely views out to sea were the blue of the sea blends into the sky.
There are shops bars and cafes just back off the sea front but everything is low key.
It makes a nice change to come to Turunc just to relax and be quiet for a short time before going back to Icmeler.

this year we will have our grandson three and a half with us.dont fancy sitting in a freshly dug hole on the beach for two weeks.any ideas of trips that would amuse a manic three year old.

At that age I dont think the jeep safari would suit, neither the boat trips, so I think you are destined to have 14 days up to your neck in that hole.

One thing about kids is that all they want out of an holiday is,
Sand, Sea.
Oh yes and ice cream.

I think Tims watching a match with extra time.
Come on Tim, get your bum off that settee and post those pics you promised us.

Don't know when you went to Turunc - we were there last September and the council man was charging everyone for sunbeds - there were even notices up. We had bought a drink from the bar behind us as soon as we got there (as we did the year before and didn't get charged for the sunbed then) - bit confusing!

Yeah they starting charging for sun beds again last summer unfortunately

Hi Babs, we were over last May and didnt get charged.
Seems odd really because all the sunbeds belong to each bar they supply there own.
There is a public beach just after you come over the bridge onto the beach
but I didnt think they charged here as people just laid on their towels.

Things are always changing I suppose and if the council can make a bob or two they may have brought in new beds and brollies and decided to extract more money from the tourist.

Bet the bar owners are miffed because if the council are charging for the beds it means you can take onto the beach your own food and water and not be obliged to frequent the cafe fronting the beach.

Gene, when we went to Turunc last May they were starting to replace all the umbrellas with posh new ones. I am not sure if they were charging for sun beds at that time but certainly when we went later on in the year they were. Although we had to pay we still used whichever bar we were sat in front of for drinks etc and most people seemed to be doing the same so hopefully they won't lose out too much.
