icmeler atm's advice please

Postby roymoz » 12 Jan 2009 19:57

hi folks. were off to icmeler for the first time in august & i'd like to know how many atm's/cash machines there are in the resort & if they are reliable or are always running out of money? also, on holiday truths there seems to be a lot of people advising on taking sterling to change once your there as the exchange is going to be better than uk.i do'nt fancy taking all currency in case i lose it so would prefer going to the atm or maybe even travellers cheques?

There are 3 or 4 ATMs in the main square plus a few more dotted around resort. Try looking at Google maps, try this link, not sure if it will work or not:

I've never had any problem withdrawing money from them.

Hi Roymoz

There a few in the centre. The HSBC machine gives you Sterling, Euro's Or lira. This machine seems to run out quite alot. There is another machine over the road which stands on its own away from the rest of the machines, I think it is Green. We never had any trouble getting Sterling out of that one. We then go to the Supermaket below ICR offices to change our money they usually give a good rate.

I always take a mixture - enough lira to see me through the first day, sterling travellers cheques, english notes and my cards.

There are ATM machines located in the centre of resort, I've used them a few times and never had a problem, they should be regularly stocked.

You will get a much better exchange rate in resort than here in the UK, so don't buy too many liras here before you go.
I always change my cheques and cash in a supermaket and get a much better rate than in the change offices.

Credit and debit cards are accepted pretty much all over too.

Make sure you hire a safety deposit box on arrival, usually £10 per week -worth it for peace of mind!

Hope that helps!

Mazz

Like you Mazz I also take a mixture, try to save my sterling for bartering, but don`t forget to open a NATIONWIDE flexi account for the atms and possibly a Nationwide visa card as there is NO withdrawel or overseas charges on these cards, so you have more of your money. Others charge over £2.00 per withdrawel or transaction. Over 2 weeks it adds up.

Was going to say that very same thing Steve!
We also found that the HSBC machine ran out of money quite often, but I would definitely reommend changing your money in the resort, since the exchange rate is always better than it is here.

my advice is DO NOT use them ,unless a guard is there outside a bank...my wifes debt card was scammed in the square to the tune of £926 may i tell you it was a wonderful lift to our hols.(i wish ) the hassle of the bank and police ,a translater etc. ruined our second week.now according to the owners of the bars around ,it happened quite often right through the hols. every thing we did had to be in marmaris by appointment bank and police, translater etc. we are still owed £20 by the police translater, and we,ve put that down to experience.thank goodness for jimmy (okimo bar) he took us all over,in the fall out be warned bill atkinson

i have been using atm's for a number of years now, especially the nationwide flex card as this card doesn't charge for taking your own money out you also get a better exchange rate. Even better than in and around the resort. Last May the rate around resort was 2.32YTL /£ on the nationwide card i never recieved less than 2.41YL /£ in fact at towards the end of the hol i was getting 2.45YTL /£. I have had no probs with using the cards but you must be vigilant when using them. Take precautions as you would at home, and maybe even more.

atm

Postby archieb » 13 Jan 2009 18:31

hi, we have never used the ATM machines and unless we absolutely had to wouldnt either, its not work the risk, we always take English notes with us, like some other people we always have a little turkish money for when we arrive for tips etc. We just put our cash in the safe and take out what we need each day, never had any problem doing this and saves on getting money exchanged, every place we have ever paid for anything always ask whether we want to pay with british or turkish money..jacqui :D

That must have been a real upset for you! How did they scam it? I usually take cash and change in resort and use atm's in the square to top if necessary, I've never had a problem so far, but your experience has made me think twice.

We always take pounds and keep them in the safe, taking out when needed, we have always found this to be best, usually you get a much better rate than at home. We also take a Nationwide card in case we buy any large items, although hubby tries hard to make sure we dont, we being the royal we of course. 8) 8)

You can do either, roymoz - most eating out places and shops will take either sterling or lira - in fact, you'll see prices displayed in both currencies almost everywhere.

roy, as Blondie says, you can use either
But at the risk of stating the obvious, they will only accept sterling in notes and you'll get your change in Lira
We always pay for our boat trips in sterling - and sterling can be very handy on the markets cos that way, you know just what you're paying
