What do you think?

Postby manders » 10 Oct 2008 12:47

Hi everyone

after reading the posts I have realised Icmeler has changed quite a lot this year and a lot of you have been disapointed in the way you have been treated ie, grape man, staff at cabana etc. What is the overall general feeling do you think it will get better/worse?

Has anyone working/living, in icmeler mentioned the illtreatment and feelings of holidaymakers to any Turkish that own the restaurants, etc. Admin I know you are over there and I think redrhino aka Genes a regular visitor and his daughter has a share in Pleasure what do you think? Is this maybe just an 'off' year and things will change or do you think this behaviour is for keeps.

Iv only been to Icmeler once last year and loved it, unfortunatley due to my mum taking ill I had to cancel my 3wks in July this year but I was planning on going next year but now I dont know. I know its just a few people behaving like this but as its just me and my 16yr old daughter I already feel quite vunerable in Turkey as most think we are looking for romance (which we arent) therefore I would feel quite frightened if we were treated badly OR am I just reading too much into the posts and overreacting, please enlighten me and let me know what you think. :D

We have been fortunate that we have not come across any of the issues people have mentioned, we did have an issue with two groups of English having a go at each other but thats the first problem I have seen since 2002.

Did we enjoy our holiday, definately and even with the exchange rate being terrible I think it was our best year.

Cant wait to get back for 21 nights next August.

I deffinatly wouldn't let it put you off!
I have been going for 4 years now,yes thinks have changed but i still get butterflys and get excited when coming from Marmaris and you get that first glimpse of Icmeler.

I am trying a different part of Turkey for a week with my auntie and her family but will still take a day trip to Marmaris/Icmeler and then i will hopefully be back for 2 or 3 weeks end of August.

I say don't let it put you off the positive's out number the negatives! You will have a great time and come home wanting more i'm sure!!

In my opinion the overcharging and makeing mistakes with a persons bill is not new.
I have warned people for years to check their bills to make sure the meal and drinks consumned tallies with the bill.
It has got a little worse this year but still does not effect my holidays to Icmeler.

Trying to chat up the women again is nothing new and much depends on how far a person allows the "Chatting Up" to go on.
Always be on your guard and when walking home at night avoid being on your own walk with a friend and this does not meen someone you have just met in a bar.

Icmeler is still a beautifull resort.

have to agree with all thats been said,
the incidents mentioned on the forum are thankfully few and far between........iclemer is still a great place..........one that you feel at home in.
as im a bloke......cant realy comment on the "looking for romance" thing, but im sure with the frendliness of our hosts, provided you take the same precautions as you would in any uk town,im sure you would be fine!
as for overcharging ect, wouldnt it be nicer to dispute a bill with the sun in your face, and usualy get an instant appology and refund, than spend three hours arguing with some spotty faced idiot who insists you come back tommorow after the till has been checked?
in the case of the grape sellers.yeah.its annoying and somthing that needs to be sorted........but id rather face that than some drug fuelled toss*** whos just snatched my money!
by reading this forum you are aware of the potential risks that COULD happen...and therefore prewarned
i personaly would let my wife and her mum go anywhere in iclemer at any time...id be fairly sure that they would be safe and free from harm.
that cant be said about most towns citys and even villages in england unfortunatly
go...........enjoy..........and come back relaxed.refreshed.....and scourng the travel books for the following years trip!

I would say that the only real change we have been aware of is that there is less hassle, we as a family intend to go to Icmeler for many years to come hopefully, we have made good friends with a some of the turkish/kurdish people and keep in touch by text and mail. We have been shown nothing but kindness and good hospitality, as we have a 15 year old daughter we are more than aware of the dangers that are out there for the young ones but this can happen in any town in this country, your security and common sense should not be left at the airport...this goes for any age jacqui x :D

I think the motto has to be

Don't take risks on holiday that you wouldn't take at home.

Would you walk out of a shop without checking your change?

Would you immediately trust someone that you had just met?

Would you fall for a sob story/chat up line/complement etc...?

I always bare this in mind and even though things can still happen I'm pleased to say that at leat following this motto there's nothing more that I could have done!!!

i would have to say go for it manders...we've been back for 2 weeks and we had a great time. no incidents of being overcharged or people being rude to us, just friendly, smiley people as always....that's locals as well as holidaymakers.

as for budding romeos, if that's what holidaymakers are looking for that's fine , they're spoilt for choice, but if it's not what you're looking for you just take their patter with a pinch of salt...and a smile.

certainly never felt unsafe walking around icmeler, unlike almost every other place i've ever visited.

You will get things like what people have said where ever you go. I feel safer in Icmeler then I have anywhere else abroad before

not experienced any problems really. I still enjoy it, we are planning to go back in june. We are not big fans of the entertainment there, but apart from that we love the place.

Unfortunatley we had a couple of bad experiences as I mentioned in my review.
But I have to say that the friendliness & honesty of the majority of Turkish people far out weighs these incidents.
In no way would I let our experiences deter me from going.
In fact we have just booked again for next year and that thought alone gets me through the winter :D

Hi Manders

I can only echo what the others have said, yes we noticed a change this year, but that was only here and there - and I think it's a passing thing

Icmeler is just the same as ever in the main and it's a shame if those of us who posted warnings etc have put you off - apologies, that wasn't my intention at all!

We've already booked for next year and Icmeler still beats anywhere else hands down for me, so I'd say go for it - and look at all of the positive threads rather than the bad news ones

I'd say go for it, have a great time and stop worrying

My biggest disappointment when in icmeler is the having to leave and come home and start counting down to next year

As has been mentioned in previous posts just be as careful as you would here and don't take unneccessary risks and you'll have a great time.

I can't wait to get back next May :)

Enjoy your holiday.

we have been 3 times, yes, i feel there has been a change, but it still doesnt alter my view that this is the only place i have ever been to that just draws me back

it depends what you want from a holiday.......if you want some lively bars, and music go in the main season.......if you want it a little quieter, go in sept..

for me, i just feel settled here, and although i will visit other places around turkey, i know i will keep coming back here ,

Hi Manders, I can only add my encouragement to the previous posts. The positives of Icmeler hugely outweigh the negatives and if we had found it twenty years ago we would, by now, be seasoned veterans.

At home, we live in a small town with very little crime but what there is occurs after dark and I never feel comfortable if my wife is returning late from a night out.

In Icmeler, we are generally up the valley or near the old village and in three years we have never felt uncomfortable or threatened in any way, shape or form during daylight or darkness.

Moral of post:- go for it lass, relax and enjoy, then count the days before you return.

yes Icmeler has changed sometimes not for the better but on the whole it`s still a great place to be , unfortunatley next year I`ll be in alanya but will be back to Icmeler in 2010.I think this forum has a lot to do with more people going to Icmeler as they read how great we all feel it is then they want some of it.Should we all start slating the place and try and keep it all to ourselves?Roll on 2010
