Going in August with missus kids and in laws. In laws just phone me up and asked about how many fags you can bring back , I know its 200 but they asked what duty would they pay if they declared the rest, they want to bring back 1000, crazy if you ask me I want to go on holiday to enjoy myself not to save money when im back, but any help would be appreciated. I would imagine if they did that it would just be the same as buying them here at the same cost.

Just buy the 1000 and stick 2 sleeves in each case and 1 sleeve in one hand luggage
Problem solved

cheers for the info, like you say it's the risk you take. Trouble is I look like a bloody football hooligan so I'm bound to be searched. If they only stopped one in a thousand I'd be the one...lol

we got stopped at gatwick 2 years ago but we took the cellofane wrappers of when she searched our suitcases i acted dumb and said i thought we were allowed as we had taken the wrappers off they were not for resale, she took pity on us and let us through. although she said if we were caught again they would confiscate them

I always thought it was a risk you take until our friends last year got stopped at Liverpool airport with over a 1000 cigs, they had undone the packs and scattered them around thier suitcases.
They had to pay the duty (dont know how much) or forfeit the cigs, they paid up.
Someone told us later, and i don't know if it is true, that when the cases are taken off the flight they are put through an x ray machine to detect this kind of thing.

I forgot to say that we were told if you got caught you would be banned from bringing any cigs in again. Does anyone know if this is true?

Thanks for all the tips..pardon the pun. It seems that it is a risk, if they stop you from doing it again though once been let through how do they do this, must put stamp something in passport.

We got stopped at Manchester with about a thousand they let us keep them without paying the duty but warned us, no more.

Not true, however your passport number has a note against it (don't ask me how I know

)

If you are caught once you are flagged each time you go through passport control.

We did not even get to the customs at Manchester. They were mob handed and came out to us as soon as our luggage was collected and put on the trolley. I agree with the fact that they know what is coming through.
Except for the fact that our cigs were in the hand luggage not the case and that did not go through anything at Manchester.
Never mind . Won't go it again

like someone else said, it's a risk bringing anything more than 200 each back with you - much as I like a bargain, I for one won't risk it
and as for paying the duty, am nearly sure it makes them roughly the same price as here so that's a non starter too

I've just returned and the cost of cigarettes has increased at
Dalaman aitport, last year they were about £13 for 200 Regal and this year £17 for 200. Didn't look at the price for L&M though. I brought 500 back this year 100 in my case with a cigarette taken out of each packet and 200 as my allowance and 200 as my friends allowance as she doesn't smoke!!

if you get caught you are given a warning and told not to buy anymore for the next 6 months, it is kept on record against your passport
