I tend to get swollen ankles every time I go abroad, and the last holiday I had to Icmeler (first two weeks in June) my left ankle was swollen for the whole time. The mosquito bite received at Dalaman airport on my way to Icmeler didnt help.

When I come back in October, I am going to buy the elastic stockings from boots to wear during the flight. I do try to drink lots of water and keep my feet up during the day.

Anybody got any other tips. I know they recommend not to drink too much alcohol, but I usually do have a drink every night when on holiday.

i know the feeling sometimes mine are that swollen they feel as if they are going to split what i have done the last couple of years is get water tabs off my doctor just to take whilst on holiday & they have helped me immensely ,i know some doctors are reluctant to give them but if you explain he may prescribe some for you hope this helps

Hi Mary, i suffer from this as well...not good is it.
Mine usually starts the second week i put it down to the heat.and by the end of an evening ankles are a bit tight and puffy,i run a few inches of cold water in the bath or a bowl and stand in that for a while,bit tricky if you have had a couple of drinks ...but it usually does the trick.
I also try to sleep with my feet raised up higher than my head,have even tried sleeping upside down with feet up on the wall to get the blood flowing back up my legs.
Must look a right picture when i come home after a night out.

Mary those stockings are expensive but if you go to Asda and look near the toiletries there are black socks which say flight socks on them and they are very cheap compaired to the "proper" flight socks.

I have big legs and couldn't get flight socks that fitted me and these are great and they actually work as I have tried them on quite a few flights this year and really do help.

Thanks all. Yes, I could ask my Doctor for some of those water tablets before my October holiday, I didnt think about that.

Good tip about the water as well, but might be better for me to buy a small bowl instead of trying to balance in the shower after a few vodka's or efes.

Admin, in work at the moment but popping over to Asda to fill up with petrol at lunch time, I will pick some of those socks up today. Thanks.

savers chemist chain are selling proper flight socks for 2.49 in a black and yellow box as good as the expensive ones

I know this might sound odd, but a swim in the cold sea is very good for the circulation and tends to get rid of lots of aches and pains

I tried the sea in June, but it was a wee bit cold, but at least it got up to my knees

Cutting out salt can help, and steeping your feet in Epsom salts is suppost to help.

Its my fingers that swell up during the day I have to keep my rings off.

My anlkes tend to swell also.At night I raise the bottom of the mattress by putting a blanket or couple of cushions.

My left ankle was much worse than the right, that was because of the Mozzie bite, so I think I better spray well with repellent before leaving Cardiff in October, although, hopefully the little blighters wont be so bad at that time of year.

saw black knee high flight socks in Aldi yesterday, for £2.99 i think.....in lots of different sizes....right up to xxl......

Thanks though, would always be wise to invest in another pair. I dont have a savers anywhere near me, as they were cheap there too, so I thought the price at Asda was good. They are about £12 in Boots for Scholl flight stockings.
