Icmeler Online Holiday Forum & Reviews - Turkey

When the temperature is extremely hot (and it will be when we go to Icmeler the first two weeks of August), my legs swell up so much, my feet take on a Shrek like appearance and my shoes don't fit.

Does anyone know of a remedy for this ? my friend suggested water tablets but my Doctor won't prescribe them and just says I've to drink plenty of water - I do and it doesn't work. Does this happen to anyone else ?

try resting for a while with your legs elevated.....say ona pillow or two...

if it gets painful then see a doctor.......

You need to tell the Doctor cos could be ticker probs like I've got

I have the same problem but feet and ankles only, I went out one night and decided to have Liver (Wonderful) but as I know liver can trigger a gout attack I took a precautionary anti-imflamatory when I got back to the apartment, within two hours I had ankles again.

Buy some Zinopin, you can buy them on the net. They are not cheap 14.99 some sites are post free also Lloyds Chemist stock them. It is a natural product which works for many people. I read about them in the Daily Mail some years ago because i have had DVT and I was concerned about a four hour + flight. They get rid of that tight feeling and make the flight more comfortable and when you get there no swollen legs. It's not a miracle cure if you always have swollen legs but if it is travel related they are very good. Would not go away without them.
The guy who invented them is an eminent vascular surgeon in London, Dr Scurr. Google them and see what you think.

I got swolen ankles and feet in benidorm. I don't what caused it, hope it doesn't happen again.

you can get herbal water tablets from any of the main and small health food shops.

I had it once on my feet the first time i went to egypt but i put that down to drinking more than 1 glass of wine on the plan, now i just stick to water.

but drinking plenty of water is a good idea

Your Doctor knows your health much better than anyone on here does. Take his professional advice. Alternatively discuss with a pharmacist in this country. Don't be tempted to buy internet or "natural" diuretics (water tablets) they quite literally kill. In the soaring heat the last thing you need to do is dehydrate your body further. A word of caution against Zinopin, watch it's interactions with other medicines. You cannot take it if you are on warfarin, aspirin or any NSAID's. Again, it's sold in pharmacies, so discuss with the pharmacist.
Health professionals are fully accountable for the advice given.

Hi Kazz59 - my sister has similar problems and it usually kicks off with the flight. (She is on blood pressure medication so has to be cautious taking any other tablets). In the recent hot weather here (unusual I know) her ankles started to swell and she was advised to try wearing flight socks. She got them from Boots and they have worked a treat. I know everyone's different but it's worth a try.

Perhaps we all should leave all medical matters to Steve Crowe as he seems to be the current resident armchair expert.
The lady asked a question we answered it it an effort to ease her problem.

First of all DO NOT buy any 'Water' tablets online or over the counter. These can lead to further problems and only really should be taken when prescribed by a doctor.

Questions...Do you have high blood pressure? Do you drink enough water during the day? Do you over indulge in diuretic drinks..coffee, tea and of course alcohol?

The body can try to retain fluid if it is dehydrating by storing it in the tissues and gravity drops it down hence swollen ankles. If you do not have high blood pressure or any other cardiac problems your problem may be dehydration.

My family and I follow a routine on holiday. We never drink alcohol before 2pm. During the day we sip water all the time, we drink a minimum of 3 litres per day in hot countries. Every night before going out for our evening meal and copius amounts of alcohol we have a sachet of rehydrate, remember you al loosing essential electolytes all day through sweat.

The rule of thumb that we use is Urine coming out should look like water going in. This will make sure you are well hydrated.

Ask you Doctors/Pharmacists opinion before you buy anthing online or take any medication that is NOT prescribed by your GP.

Any of your other medications could react against what ever you have bought.

Please get professional medical advice first.

Having swollen legs on holiday is bad enough but you really don't want to spend your holidays in the hospital.

I am not saying don't take anyones advice on here but just double check whatever you buy with a professional

Drink plenty of water - that really is the only thing you can do without medication.

Even if you don't feel as tho you're thirsty keep drinking plenty.

I was in a right state on our honeymoon (had infected mozzie bites too) my feet and ankles swelled up and I could hardly walk, I could just about squeeze my feet into my sandals and hobble around.

I was told to drink more and when I did it relieved the pressure and the swelling went down. I've found that as long as I drink plenty of water before and during the flight my feet/ankles don't swell like they did - infact last year coming back from Icmeler was the first time I came home and I wasn't swollen at all.

I don't envy you you poor thing.


PS As Richard says, elevate your feet when you're in bed - put a pillow under the matteress to elevate them a bit and that works wonders too.

I take back what I wrote and apologise to anyone i may have offended I above anyone should have known better and here is why. My legs swelled up not flight related. I went to see my GP who put me on water tablets. I had in fact had a DVT and a pulmonary embolism(sp). So I meant well but the road to hell is paved with good intentions once again they are right see your GP if you have a problem whether it is flight related or not.

Hi everyone

Thanks very much for your help and suggestions.

I know that I haven't got a health problem as I've only recently been for a full M.O.T (a perk of my job) and my heart, blood pressure etc, etc are all in good working order.

I think the problem lies in what Kilda was saying. I do drink plenty but maybe too much coffee, diet coke and of course Efes. The problem has only occured twice and that has been the two times I've been to Icmeler in the height of summer, other months outside July/August and I'm fine.

This time I will make sure I drink buckets full of water during the day - then buckets full of Efes in the evening but if you see anyone walking round with Shrek feet - it's me.

hi i had the same problem last year tried everything nuthing helped me am going to ask the docter for some thing and i hope he can help its not just turkey i get it every time i go on holiday

I get the Shrek affliction every August in Icmeler too
the sight of me shuffling to avoid missing our flight home was a spectacle to say the least!!

Seriously though, since then I've been reeeeeeeally good during the day and drink nothing but copious amounts of water - and avoided walking around
it worked a treat

LOL Fanny, I know what you mean. The last time it happened the swelling took a good few days to go down once I got home, and had to go to work in my flip flops - looked really sexy with my suit

dont you just hate how they feel too?!
mine feel all wobbly on the inside and I'm terrified of going over on my ankle and breaking it without knowing - drama queen or what!

Last year when my legs swelled up i spent a day on a sunbed under the sun brolly with a beach ball under my legs drinking water all day!!!
