Want to barter by i'm rubbish at it

Postby mabbo » 13 May 2008 16:15

Hi All, This Saturday will be our third visit to Icmeler :D . I was determined to try somewere else in turkey but the draw (and our two ankle biters)of icmeler is to much.Anyway to the topic.I love the banter between the shop keepers etc and i do try and barter with them but i'm rubbish at it. Has anyone got any golden rules that should be used.

I just decide on how much I am prepared to pay for any item, try to barter and walk away if they dont accept my price. I have a good laugh in between.

Only once I have walked away empty handed, but I did get called a 'Gypsy'

use your other half as ammunition!;)

I always ask my wife's opinion on whatever it is, who then says..."oooo I think thats a bit much", straight away the price comes down!

or even better, do what my mother in-law does...go into the shop with less money than you need to pay the money they are asking. Say you really want it but you only have say £10 on you and your better half has walked away. I know she has managed to get a few things like this!

I know its not exactly bartering, but gets you a good price!

I always offer half what they say as you know they will probably come back with a 75% offer i then offer around 60%. If they say no then say ok thanks very much and begin to walk away, if they let you go it was genuinely too low but if they call you back you have a sale!

I pestered the life out of a chap last year for a very heavy silver chain worth 150 quid, i got it for 80 in the end so not a bad deal.
