Why not just buy a phonecard, we bought a 10 Lira one and we rang home many times and still didnt use it all.

If you take a UK registered mobile to Turkey, and give it to a localand they put in a Turkish sim card. The phone will get blocked after a few weeks and as it was not declared on arrival at customes, then the person will have to have it opened, this can cost a few lira up to 80ytl.

A couple of years ago, this happened to my UK mobile after 5 weeks using a local sim card. I was living in Turkey at the time.

The easiest way, if you want to give a present of a mobile is to buy one in Turkey.
