Turkish Wedding

Postby clare » 16 Mar 2008 10:10

Hi everyone, I am looking for some advice we have been invited to a turkish wedding while we are on holiday in August. Can you please advise me on what sort of present we take for the bride and groom, I know that they do it very different to us in England. Any advice would be appreciated.

I cannot wait we have never been to a turkish wedding before, I guess it will be an experience.

Look forward to receiving any advice.

Wedding

Hi Clare

I've been to a couple of Turkish weddings and for a present I was told to take either money ( lira) or gold. During the ceremony you will have a chance to give your present with all the other guests. If it is money, then you will be given a pin to pin the money onto the brides dress, and if gold then you place that on the bride. Most Turks usually buy a gold bracelet. this the bride keeps and will only sell an item if money is needed in later life.
It is cetainly an experience but all weddings vary, depending on the couple, whether both Turkish or mixed nationality.
Anyway enjoy yourself and take plenty of photos!

Go to ANY jewellery shop and ask for TAM CUMHURIYET ALTIN - meaning WHOLE REPUBLIC GOLD or for a YARIM CUMHURIYET ALTIN - meaning HALF REPUBLIC GOLD - You can also get quarters but suggest you dont. Its a coin type gold and is used for wedding or other celebration presents - the price of this gold is about the same no matter which shop you go to with in the country. Instead of giving money to the groom and the bride, this is what you give so they can sell this gold when they are in need or to get by hard times through out their marriage.

If you wanted to give them something they would not sell and keep forever, then a nice watch or other jewellery is used.

You can also, simply give them, money, cheque etc:) This is exactly why I got married over 12 times and stopped after getting my self the ferrari, hehehe:) joke.. :)

They used to have weddings daily at Captain Bullshits when we were there a few years ago never saw anyone pin money on the dress though.

Thanks for the advice, would they be offended if we were to give them an english present. I think I may stick to the money do not want to offend them if I get the wrong jewellery. Is there an average amount which you given them do not want them to think we are tight.

Hi Clare, I dont think they would be offended at all, however as with most couples over here they may have lived together for a while prior to getting married so would probably not need the usual toaster ect that us brits would give....hehe.
I went to my friends wedding in October (I have entered a few pics) and we all gave money it was a really nice part of the day when we were pinning the money on the bride and groom. I too have a wedding this season and think me and my partner will again give money or a gold coin as a gift. Hope this helps :P x

Hehe sorry on my previous msg I forgot to mention that me and my partner amoung a group of other friends were buying the gold coin certainly not just myself, although were not tight by anymeans sure we could deffinatly not afford to give a gift of such value.
With regards to the value of the money pinned on the dress if I remember rightly they were 50YTL notes.

300 ytl blimey if I am not wrong that is around £100, I was thinking along the lines of about 50ytl would they be offended at receiving this amount then. Please advise as I do not want to offend them.

I definitely know it is a wedding and not a circumsition. Blimey I will keep away from any rice just in case :o
