The daft things we do

Now that the holiday season is almost upon us, if you're like me you do some daft things in the big build up. Its as if I can't stop myself, its just things that HAVE to be done, like:

From New Year I have the calendar marked with the number of days it is till we go to Icmeler, and every day I score a number off

From 100 days till we go, I start putting £1 a day in one of those sealed tins that you have to open with a tin opener. This is my spending money for the airport to splurge on a meal, perfume, gin and more gin

I buy far too many holiday clothes then can't take half of them with me

and lastly, but most importantly

I tell everyone at work every day how many days it is till I go away, and boy I bet they're as glad as me when the day comes.

Does anyone else do these kind of things? It may be that there's something else I should be doing

We also did the pound idea last year with the sealed tin. It was great!
Started for this year already we go in 15weeks also made my countdown calender yesterday only 105 more sleeps to go! So excited. Each week i buy something new for holiday either new clothes or sun tan lotion!
Makes the holiday seem closer! :D

Hi Debbie, I buy the tins in The Present Shop or think I saw some in Woolies, they come in two different sizes depending on how much you think you'll save. I just find its a great start to my holiday to splurge on whatever I fancy at the airport, I know sometimes things can be a bit more expensive but HEY I'M ON HOLIDAY

Hi Dotty,

The £1 thing is a great idea. I always want perfume etc at the Airport but then start thinking I'm dipping into the holiday fund before we even leave the Country!! This way, it's an added bonus. Will make sure I mention it to my 18 year old daughter as well. :)

As soon as the New Year is here, I start thinking about buying new suitcases, bikini's (and diets!) and saving my spending money. Just spent all afternoon on e-bay looking for a new travel iron and hairdryer!! Still got 206 days to go! :P

I think the build up is all part of the holiday - all the looking forward to it, buying bits, counting the days, hours, minutes and saying oooh this time in 10 weeks I'll be on the beach... and genearlly driving everyone scatty!

I also have a chart up on the wall at home. I don't cross off the days, I cross off Sunday dinners... the next one to go is week 10, so nearly into single figures!

I also drive my colleagues at work mad with constantly saying oooh this time next week I'll be just landing, or on the beach, in the bar or whatever...
But on my last day in the office and after the girl who covers me when I'm off has gone home, I print off lots of pictures of Icmeler and strategically place them in between the files that I'm going to give her - having written things on each sheet like "you'll never guess where I've gone...." and "Am probably asleep now on this sunbed (circled)" and "I'll be eating a steak here tomorrow"... So every couple of sheets she'll come to a picture of Icmeler! She found it funny last time!

Great idea with the savings tin!

Oh Mazz, you've certainly given me a few ideas there as to how to drive my colleagues mad even when I'm on holiday!!

Just as an update re the savings tin, last year me and my partner (Greg) only saved for 2/3 months, putting only 50p and 20p pieces in the tin, and there was £84. This year we've been saving since New Year (still only 50p & 20p pieces) and we don't go away till 28 May, and the tin is really heavy just now so I'd imagine there will be at least £150 by the time we go. Also, I forgot to say that the weekend before we go away we have a tin opening ceremony - we both write a guess sum on a piece of paper, fold it up so the other can't see. Then we open the tin, count the money and whoever has the nearest guess is the winner, the loser having to do all the fetching and carrying of drinks etc at the airport. Sure you can all think of other duties for the loser, so lets have them.

For the last 10 weeks I've been giving £20 every Monday to a friend at work to save up for me. This is for airport spends, paying for a taxi from the airport to Icmeler, paying for air conditioning in the room (the apartments we've booked have 6 hrs free and if you need it all the time you pay extra) and then if I see anything that I want to buy that's a bit pricey to come out of the holiday spends fund, I can do that too. We don't go until 17th August, so I'll have a nice wee stash over and above the usual holiday spending money. I count down the weeks to go as I hand over the cash - keeps me going on a rainy Monday morning! We're off to Tsilivi for a week on 27th May but as we've not been to Turkey before and after reading the postings on this forum and viewing the pictures we're more excited about our holiday in August. :D

I always mark up the weeks to go on the calendar(16 on friday!!)

I start a diet which fathoms out before the summer!

I have 2 tins for saving, 1 is full of loose change and the other has pound coins in.

I drive my workmates crazy going on and on and on about my holidays, i think they're glad they're glad when i go so they get some peace n quiet!!

Brilliant idea about the £1 tins!! As it happens I saw some on sale in our local pound shop yesterday, some fair size ones and some bigger ones, bargain and a top tip!

We started our tin at Xmas and put £1,£2 coins, and any lottery wins in we opened it last week and we had two hundred pounds in which pays for our transfers and airport money.
I think they are great and we have started another one as we still have a few weeks to go.

Update - we had our 'tin opening' ceremony last night, drinks, buffet, turkish music - still feeling the effects this morning. £143.80 in the tin so gonna have a good spend at the airport. Just goes to show how 50 & 20 pence pieces mount up. Now got to do my weight training bit and get them paid into the bank!
