Patara?

Postby Chris221273 » 20 Jan 2014 07:49

Hey all.
We are thinking of heading to patara this year.
What's it like there?
Is it a bit cooler in the summer months?
And is the TL rate likes to be lower than Icmeler?

Patara is a beautiful area with lots of old ruins and a beautiful beach

I would say a car is a must for me if I stayed so I could get out and about to visit lots of local areas and sights

The Turkish rate is the rate and would be the same anywhere but don't expect sweet shops offering to change your money as they do in Icmeler, in fact I only remember seeing one small shop at Patara

Sounds perfect JT.
We had a manic year last year and our 2 weeks off in the summer consisted of 12-14 hr days in the garden totally re-landscaping it, so a relaxing holiday is just what we want.
I did think about hiring a car, but feared the efes sales figures would drop dramatically and that wouldn't be good for the Turkish economy

Hi Chris
Patara is amazing and as John says there are some great landmarks/tourist attractions to visit, there is only 1 main street there tho it s tiny, but the beach is amazing.

Reminded me of Ainsdale/Formby point with all the sand hills

You could see where the snakes had left a trail after digging in the sand for turtle eggs

We went on honeymoon in 1998 and would go back in a heartbeat if we didn't have the kids. We decided to climb up the great big hill to the left of the beach path expecting there to be more beach and were gutted when it was just a sheer drop into the sea :)

Hi Chris
Been to Patara many times, Stayed at the Apollon Hotel and Mehmet Hotel both fantastic places.
Its about six years since we last holidayed there but I have friends that visit each year and let me know how the village is going on and any new developments. The weather is typical of Turkey, very hot in the summer months. The surrounding countryside and mountains form the most amazing views. Most of the accomodation is bed & breakfast and in the evening there must be over 25+ resturants to choose from, all have their own style of food. The Gipsy Bar is a favourite in the evenings with live Turkish music mixed with a little disco well into the early hours of the next morning. The beach is about a 20 min walk away thro the ruins which see new developments every year. You can catch a taxi to the beach for a very small charge and some hotels even provide free transport to the beach. There is resturant on the beach and sunbeds and umbrellas to hire. The beach is very sandy and not overcrowded. The staff on the beach and in the village are all very friendly as are the taxi drivers, we always used 'Jet', who incidently has a hotel near to the Apollon, you can hire any taxi driver for the day and they will take you anywhere you want. Kalkan, Kos, Fetiyie, Myra all really nice places to vist with loads of turkish culture and atmosphere.
Salikent is a place you must visit, this has floating resturants over streams and if you fancy a walk thro a gorge which begins when you wade thro an ice cold river. Also Yackie Park (maybe spelt wrong), here you can eat at the top of the trees and select your own fish from a moat outside the indoor restuarant. The waiters are incredible, they run up and down the hillside, climbing the steps up in to the trees carrying several plates of food all at once. Patara is not comercialised and can be very quiet during the day time with every one either at the beach or round their swimming pools, night time brings out the village along with the holiday makers and can get quite busy. For a more European night out Kalkan is a better place. Patara is a place that within one hour you will love it or not. Its not easy to describe but its a place where you will see the familiar faces of the people who keep going back year after year. I am led to believe that Hotel Delfin now a very popular hotel. All the hotels will provide a taxi to and from Dalaman if you so wish. I hope this gives you a insight and a flavour or the village and that if you choose Patara you have a fantastic holiday.
PS. I'm in the holiday mood now just thinking of Patara and the memories it has provide to me and my wife.

Wow thanks wizard, sounds just what we want, and we are all booked and counting down the the days. Your insight to it most helpful, and any other titbits that come to mind will be hugely appreciated.
Excited? Extremely :-D

Hi Patara Beach is stunning,if you are hiring a jeep you are not to far from oludeniz, Saklikent gorge is a must to visit.
The Lira should be the same, also if you havent booked and are looking for peace and tranquility look at blacktree cotages in the babadag mountains.

Hope this helps you enjoy your hols.
