Disabled access

Postby swizzlepop » 04 Jan 2014 19:52

Hi Im looking to go to Icmeler in September with 2 friends. 1 of which requires to use a wheelchair. Can anyone advise about apartments which are wheelchair friendly? Thank you in advance

Swizzlepop. My husband has mobility difficulties, although does not use a wheelchair, and I looked at the Murat Apartments which is a relatively new complex with a lovely pool area. If I remember correctly it has a wet floor shower. It is not far from the centre of town and is a flat walk to most places. The Bilnur Apartments (new block) is also, in my opinion, suitable for a disabled person. No doubt others will be able to give advice but one of the difficulties I have encountered is showering facilities are not always easily accessed and in particular if the person needs assistance with personal care. Hope you are successful in finding a suitable apartment and would appreciate feedback, which may also be useful to me.

The new block of the Bilnur is very good for disabled access and I believe that the apartments were specifically built with disabled people in mind. The pool also has a gentle sloped floor which will allow fairly easy access if the person is able to access the pool.

I use an electric wheelchair and my husband uses a motorised scooter. In 2011 we had a look at the Murat and found that the ramp from the pavement was ridiculously steep. I got stuck on the top and had to be pushed and then the ramp was just as steep on the other side. The ramp by the reception area is also very steep. Because of this you wouldn't have any independence as you would always need help and if you used a manual wheelchair it would be difficult for the person pushing the wheelchair.

The best that we have found is the Rhodes Apartments provided that you have a ground floor apartment. These apartments are on a lower level than the pool area so if you can sit on the wall and swing your legs over then you'll be ok. We also used a chair to help us. There is plenty of room to leave your wheelchair outside and we used to bring our batteries in at night so that they could be charged. The apartments seem quite secure and there is a person on duty throughout the night.

We put a patio chair in the shower so that we could be seated and as it was the 'open' type with a curtain around it there was plenty of room even if you needed assistance.

So if you're able to walk in the apartment the Rhodes is definitely recommended. There are two drawbacks as far as we found. There is a ladder to go into the pool which can be difficult. The other is that the apartments are quite a distance from the centre. It was no problem for us as we were not in manual wheelchairs but it would be difficult pushing a wheelchair, especially in the heat.

Other apartments we have considered is the Greenmar but there was a large step to the left, on the way to the lift so there wouldn't be independence as the wheelchair would need to be lifted every time. Don't know if it's changed at all as we haven't been there in the last two years.

Other apartments that have been suggested to us were the Imperial and the Mola. The Imperial have two apartments on the ground floor but even though accessible we found them very dark and we spend a lot of time in the apartments so they weren't suitable for us. If you only use the apartments as a base they'll be fine. We haven't visited the Mola yet so don't know if they're suitable.

Even when a place seems suitable it's only when you try and get around in the wheelchair that the problems are noticed. Hope this helps.
