Icmeler Online Holiday Forum & Reviews - Turkey

While in Icmeler this year both in July and September, eating in various restaurants, i was struck with an incredible sadness. I watched as the Rose Man tried in vain to sell his wares. No one was interested, and I got to thinking this is a sad legacy for Husnu. At times Icmeler did not have enough roses for the tourists !! And I remember people telling him to put his feet up and they would sell them for him !
To cut a long story short, people of this forum who can still remember this lovely man. Please when you go next year buy a rose, it will only cost a few lira, and lets get behind the tradition that I remember when I first started going to paradise.

Sorry don`t mean for it to sound like a begging thing, but i felt so sad about this

We see this man every year and must say have never bothered to buy a rose I'm sad to say. We had no idea of how things used to be, so this has made us think twice. When in icmeler next August it is our daughters 16th birthday and this rose seller always comes into the Florida bar and we will buy some for her.

I don't actually remember seeing any rose seller in Icmeler this year...remember seeing Husnu plenty of times, so sad to hear about his passing.

Thanks for your response, we bought roses as he was in YOLO restaurant , saw him in quite a few places, but no one wanted to buy
I I dont know if this guy is any relation to husnu, but I remember everyone at the end of the night would have a rose on their way home.
so maybe we could spare a little thought for this guy, who walks all over Icmeler to try sell his roses, and maybe bring a little sparkle to
someones night.

Sadly, we won't be back this year or I would have kept my eyes open for him - but hopefully your post will let people know he is around and maybe bring a little business his way.

Hope you dont mind me posting on this subject but another little trade that is finished now is the "shoe shine boys".
A few of these lads were dotted around and one night they set up outside the no-name bar and they never cleaned shoes for any body.
Reason for this was that every one had white trainers on !
I'm talking of at least ten years ago now.
I suppose change happens and we have to go with it.

I am sorry to say, like many l just say no. But l will buy one or two next year. However, can you please give one lira to the wee guy with the green scales near the square. I do everyday, when l see him. He is so funny and it's only 30p. He makes my day when he tells me how much or less l have lost since the last day. Normally put on.

i saw a little boy sitting with scales down the canal a few years ago, i gave him a few lira and got weighed (no interest in what weight i was just felt bad walking by and ignoring him). He was so grateful for what i gave him and wanted me to stand on the scales again as i had given twice what he was asking for
I must admit i have never bought a rose but maybe will next year (or ask hubby to) as its my birthday while we are there.
Last year we also saw an old lady begging, we were sat having a meal, cant remember where now, one of the restaurants next to the water fountains, and she walked up to us with her hands out. The waiter shouted something at her in Turkish and made her get away from his restaurant (assuming telling her to go away and stop pestering his custmers). We felt so sorry for her and my husband left his meal to chase after her and give her something. She was sooo grateful, couldn't speak English but thanked him again and again in Turkish. The waiter didn't seem to like us doing this but we felt like we had helped someone out. It was only a couple of lira - not much to us but made all the difference to them.
What i have also noticed is that in Marmaris we found that there were a LOT of children pinning turkish eyes on to you then holding their hands out for money - even pinned one on my sons nappy!. I didn't like this as to me it was another form of hassle and they seemed to surround you! I haven't experienced this in Icmeler - thankfully! at least with someone selling roses or sat with scales, they are doing selling something/offering something and it is not been forced onto you.

We have been going to icmeler for about 14 years sometimes twice a year, like next year. my hubby used to buy roses from the old rose man and he stills buys them now, the rose man who is there now will give me a rose and every year my hubby gives him 20 lira, he always tries to give him change and he always says no. at the end of the day he is trying to make a living just like everyone else there, and 20 lira is only about 6 to 7 pound
