Turkey to ban late-night sales of alcohol

With around $25 billion income from tourism it will be a sad day for Turkey

This so called ban does not affect existing premises with tourism license. it doesnt affect premises already established with a liquor licence. new business will not be able to start up within 100m of a mosque or school. you just wont be able to buy it after 10pm from the little 'corner shops'. we have similar bans in this country, off license closes, supermarket cant sell alcohol after a certain time even if they are 24 hour shops. this is as i understand it. there are lengthy threads on other forums. as far as i can see there is nothing to panic about. tourism will carry on just the same. unless all you want to do on holiday is buy alcohol from a shop after 10pm, then you are stuffed !! do you think they are that stupid to kill off tourism which is in the top 3 income providers in turkey.

Majie, I was only passing on the link to what the BBC was reporting!

I was about to say that I have now had a couple of Turkish friends check Turkish news sites and that the law would only affect shops and supermarkets.

It appears that the intention is to discourage young Turkish people from drinking alcohol so I wouldn't expect duty free will be affected (I have been wrong before though)

I just see this as yet another move towards Europe. In order to get into Europe, they have to meet certain criteria with infrastructure. So they fix the road to the resort. They develop and refurbish the airport, and they start 'introducing' some 'European' legislation. They're just fulfilling the demands that entry to the EU requires. I'm in two minds on Turkey being in the EU. The cost of our hols will go up. Our money will be worth less. But, on the other side, a great country we all love, and whose economy we all support, will benefit hugely, economically. It's a tricky one, but they've got some way to go still. Look at the news tonight.

Having said all that...54 sleeps!!
