Advise Needed please

Postby AberdeenAnn » 22 Mar 2013 14:55

Hi all
Last year I made a purchase from a Jeweller in Icmeler (who has great reviews on this site), When he returned my original chain, I said it wasn't mine and was lighter. He insisted it was saying that it was just sparkling clean and showed me the hallmark. I can now confirm it is not my chain, just my clasp with hallmark. The chain is now a different colour, so my original clasp has been attached to a different chain. I realise I cannot legally prove that this was done, however as this was outright theft, (I'm actually more upset that they would do that). Is there any action I can take before making sure everyone I know or contact (including very many Icmeler fans) to now avoid this jeweller like the plague.

Having visited Icmeler every year, sometimes twice a year for the past 6 years I can't believe how let down I feel about someone trusted doing this to me!
:(

Hi Ann

We are so sorry to hear what has happened to you and hope you get to the bottom of it but we must stress that jewellers on ICR forum are not given great reviews by our ICR company but by all the users of the site

Once again we hope you get this sorted

Well Ann, I'm a great believer in justice so my advice would be to name & shame the jeweler, especially before the season starts. It might be worth chancing your luck by returning to the shop & tell them that you had your chain checked & that you were told there were differences in the chain's value i.e. clasp & hall mark & see how they respond. They may well have their 'regular' customers but new customers could be also conned as you were but if people know in advance they can still visit the jeweler but make their own judgement whether to buy or not; I know I wouldn't take the chance. Hitting them in the pocket hurts most.
God luck whatever you decide to do. Will be interested in what others say/suggest.

Hi again Ann, Just a thought before I go & watch Scotland beat the Welsh  . Sometimes jewelers use other jewelers workshops for things like cleaning, just maybe there's a chance that the person who cheated you wasn't the actual jeweler but whoever cleaned your chain; as I say just a thought.

Thanks for that thought Roy, it did cross my mind, so I've emailed him. I also intent to go and visit when I return to Icmeler. That way I would be giving hi a chance to provide any other explanation. :(

Thanks for your responses. I had a quick response from the jeweller concerned advising that his jewellery cleaning was done by Goldsmiths. I then explained why I was asking. The Jeweller quickly responded advising that he had not had this type of complaint before and that if I went into the shop when I''m there he will examine the chain, then have it examined by an expert. Give him his due he does appear willing to help. I'll let you know how I get on after my holiday.

Thanks again for the advice

Personally I would not publish the name of the Jeweller on an open forum however if people ask send them a private email by clicking on the envelope to the right of their post.

I for one would like to know the name because I would hate to know it was the Jeweller that I recommend to people.

Hi Ann, I would appreciate knowing the jeweler concerned, so if you would be as kind to sent via e-mail as Dave suggests I would be very grateful. At least he has responded & seems to be interested in your complaint, so good luck Ann, when do you go?

To be honest I'm not really comfortable naming the Jeweller at this stage. My fear is that it was whoever did the cleaning that took my chain and that the Jeweller was unaware. I would hate to damage the reputation of the Jeweller if he is genuine. If you are not going before June I'd rather post on my return advising how this was handled. At least then you would have the full details in order to make an informed choice. I hope this is okay :)

A similar thing happened to me in Marmaris a few years ago. I took an amethyst ring into a jeweller we knew to have it resized. When I went back to get it, the stone was a completely different colour! At first the jeweller said maybe because they had to heat the ring, the heat had altered the colour of the stone. I didn't believe a word of that and insisted he replace the stone. After a heated discussion, he took us to the workshop where he had all his repairs done, and had a big row with the man who did the repairs. There was a lot of shouting and what looked like threatening gestures, and the jeweller asked us to come back to his shop for tea while the matter was sorted out. After about 20 minutes, someone arrived with the ring which now had what I think was the original stone in it. The jeweller said he had never had any complaints before and he would never use the repair man again, but I wasn't convinced. Needless to say, we never went back, and even now I won't trust my jewellery out of my sight when we are over there. We have a friend who I allow to clean it, but he does it in his shop while we are there.

I hope you get this sorted out when you go in june. If the jeweller is genuine, he will make sure you are happy with the outcome.

Yes Ann that's perfectly reasonable but please let us know how you get on, hopefully a positive result & not one that might dampen your holiday. Good luck again.

oh I have a sapphire and diamond ring that I wanted to take for resizing but must admit I was a bit worried about something like that happening.

Hi benevis,
we came so close & yet SO SO FAR  . In fairness I did include a wink in my earlier post. Never mind there's always the next defeat to look forward to. The last match against Wales in Oct I was in the Tin Tin enjoying the game until a certain Mr Bale spoiled my night.
Your ICR name is very like Scotland's largest mountain which is bigger than Snowdon
Regards
Roy.
