availability of dairy free food

Postby molly » 22 Mar 2013 13:13

Going to Icmeler in June this year. Haven't been for a few years now and I now have a little boy who has a milk allergy - can't eat anything with cows milk. Just wondering if anyone knows if you can get Soya milk and any dairy free spreads/yogurts/cereals and how much they cost. We are going self-catering - breakfast/lunch at apartments and eating out at night. Thanks.

You can certainly buy goats milk (keçi sütü"), cheese, etc, because I remember seeing it - think I've also seen soya milk too. Soya is the same in Turkish, so you should be able to recognise it easily enough (soya sütü is soya milk). Think it might be fairly expensive though - quick google search said around 9TL for a 500ml carton!

Hi Molly - I have a dairy allergy too and I've always been able to buy long life Alpro soya milk and yoghurts in the Tansas supermarket in Icmeler, not seen it any of the other larger supermarkets and definitely not in the smaller ones. Its with the long life dairy products, not in a free from section. I've not yet come across dairy free spread. It is more expensive than the UK though, from memory I think last year a litre of soya milk was about £4 and I think the yoghurts were a similar price. You will find fresh goats milk in Tansas and the goat and sheep cheese from the deli counter in the Tansas is lovely, do make sure that you double check though, as they have tried to pass off cows milk feta to me before - the cow on the packet gave it away! I've not come across a restaurant that does dairy free, but I'm always careful to avoid foods that could have been cooked in butter or had milk/cream added. Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone. It is just cows milk he is allergic to. Don't mind paying a bit extra for Soya milk as it is essential for him as he is still only little. Will definately try him with the cheese - I love feta cheese anyway so hopefully he will to. Thankfully he eats most things so plenty of veggies n chicken for dinner. Will stay away from the normal kids food as I know here some things like chicken nuggets/fish fingers contain milk and I don't fancy having to ask at every restaurant and explain the reasons! Thanks again.
