Icmeler Online Holiday Forum & Reviews - Turkey

I understand that haggling is expected at markets but assume it would not be appreciated at the checkout at Tansas. What about Jewellers? What about ordinary shops? Am I correct in thnking that one does not haggle for foodstuffs at markets? Could someone please explain the etiquette of haggling in Turkey.

Do not haggle at food shops or on buses or restaurants as they are having a bad enough time as it is.

Markets and jewelers are ok to haggle with

I usually only haggle at the market or the covered bazaar in marmaris , and also jewellers

Most places love it! But please remember how much your haggling for! I heard a couple haggling last year in a clothes shop and it was literally about £1!!! xx

Always remember the first time we tried to haggle at the market in Icmeler . It was our first time in Turkey and i was a wee bit shy on how to go about it . I was trying to buy a track suit , the guy told me how much it was and i started to haggle up the way instead of down . He was roaring with laughter . I nearly paid about £30 eventually i think i paid about £8, i have never lived it down


P.S. I am a dab hand at haggling now.

General rule is:-

If it has an individual price displayed then you cannot haggle.
However, if you are buying in bulk and not at Tansas give it a try.

If there is no price displayed then go for it. But please, know how much you want to pay and be realistic.

In Restaurants/Pubs the best bet is a free drink or taxi home.

But the best advice is to be nice to them, and they will return it 3 fold (or more)

I wouldn't even dream of haggling in a restaurant - only in the markets & jewellers
