Strange restaurant bill

Postby Lee » 19 Jul 2012 16:04

Hi,

We asked for the bill at the end of our meal and when it came it didn't add up right. The total was around 21 lira more than the meal prices, I called over the waiter and asked what it was and so he turned over the bill and written on that side was the real value and told us that's what we were to pay. I asked if the other price was including service and they said no. Anyway we paid up the correct amount and also left a tip.

Anyone else had this?

Sounds like a possible con, if the amount of the itemised items was less I would say its a receipt for the tax man but the other way round!!!! maybe they are hoping that people won't re-addup the bill.

To the best of my knowledge if the taxman walks in to a restaurant the table must have a currant bill on it.
A lot of places just put a fake bill on your table in case he walks in.
It does sound a bit strange though to have the real bill and the fake bill on the same piece of paper :?

When I asked for the bill, there was no other apart from what they gave me. They presented it to me showing the larger amount and only when I quizzed about the price, they turned it over! I reckon they were trying it on.

South coast hero, About the bill on the table.. Interesting this happened when I was at the three bells tonight, they had one in a glass, I wondered what that was for!

I always check the bill, lots of times it gets added up wrong, I've not been anywhere where it looked dodgy, sometimes they just can't read their own writing!

If you go to captain bulls**ts or romance you will always have a bill put in the glass which is to be ignored.
Have a great holiday Lee.

Many restaurants put a bill on the table which bears no resemblance to what you've ordered. They usually say "For the taxman" and the bill they give you is for what you actually had. It's not just in the resorts, we've had it in Istanbul and Cappadocia. I've never discovered the real reason for this, but every bill we get is meticulously checked before we pay it. Mistakes can be made, and are usually rectified immediately, without arguement.

We ate there last year and it was very nice. Will keep an eye on the bill if we go again this year.

Thanks.

Hmm, I don't see how you can claim VAT back from a holiday bill. I run a mobile disco business and can claim for expenses but I don't think I can class a holiday as a business expense - even it was I really can't be bothered with all the extra time / paperwork for the sake of 18%.

If it is true and you can be bothered then worth it I guess but I don't want to be thinking about tax returns on holiday lol

There is a global tax free shopping scheme but I believe retailers have to be registered with it for their purchases to count towards it (could well be wrong but it was when I was in retail). There is usually a minimum purchase amount then you ask for a refund voucher from the retailer (I think it's 100tl) - on your way out of the country you take all your goods, your receipts and your refund vouchers along with your passport to the desk for refunds to be issued. From what I've found online there is a desk at Istanbul, Antalya and Bodrum, no mention of Dalaman.

Might be a bit harder to get back tax from money spend in places that aren't registered to the scheme, and if you've got to show goods, proving a spend on 100 bottles of efes might in theory be possible ( ) but might get you barred from boarding the plane!!

You said it was 21 over in your earlier post, to be honest it doesn't matter how much over it was, no one wants to pay more than they should. No matter how good the meal was.
