Healthy eating in Icmeler

Hi everybody, I'm heading to Icmeler for my first ever trip on Thursday.

Over the past three months I've lost just over 2 stone in an attempt to look a little bit better on the beach. I am not expecting to lose weight on holiday but I don't want to pile it on either!

Can anyone recommend any healthy Turkish food I should look out for or any restaurants in Icmeler that provide good, healthy options?

Thank you :) I am so excited for Icmeler!! :D

I'm also watching what I eat as I am on Slimming World. However, you are going to the best place for fabulous fruit and salad material. They are so cheap to buy in the market. What I usually do is buy half a watermelon, peaches or nectarines and have them in the fridge for when I feel like a snack. I consider myself to be a Fruitaholic (if there is such a thing) but my delight whilst in Icmeler is to buy half a carrier bag full of cherries from the wholesaler, as they are just about to finish in season when we are out there, hence buying half a carrier bag full. (not being greedy, ha ha ha, just afraid they are going to finish quickly).

I'm sure you will survive and that you will find healthy eating pretty easy. Plenty of chicken, steak, fish, pastas and various salads.

Have a lovely holiday. I shall be in Paradise on the 27th July for three and a half weeks.

Helen

First off, congratulations on your weight loss!! I agree totally with Helen - fruit and salad from the market/shops is great! Where are you staying - self catering? I love to have an early walk into Marmaris (too hot to go late!!) and go to the big fruit/veg market and then get dolmus back. Sorry forgot what day it,s on but i am sure someone will remind us? Eating out is easy - most resturants are willing to accommodate what you want if asked ie. grilled and no dressings. I actually lost three pounds in a fortnight!! Plenty of water a must whatever. I used to have tuna or greek salads for lunch and fish or veggie dishes in evening - all great but just ask how a dish is cooked ie..lot of olive oil in it etc..! Drink of vino or Effes was the hardest to resist...but hey! you are on yer hol,s!!! so i opted for spritzers and diet cokes.

Hope this is of some help. Enjoy Icmeler..it,s the best. Cannot wait till September for some sunshine! :D

Diane.

I agree - both my daughter and myself actually think it's easier to eat healthily in Turkey. I much prefer the fruit and veg there, especially the fruit. Grilled meats and fish are also healthy and most places do them, along with lovely salads. Just try to resist the gorgeous desserts and creamy cocktails - not so healthy!

I agree with Blondie.... trouble is it's the alcohol... especially when it's so hot and the ice cold Efes goes down sooooo well :D

Don't forget to burn loads of calories by swimming, walking around the resort at night and drink lots of bottled water at every opportunity.

Up earlyish, in the pool and 30 lengths before breakfast!

(You don't need chips or fried food in Icmeler - so much choice whichever type of holiday you have booked !!)

Oh, and boogie on the dance-floor at night - it's all exercise of one type or another !!

Well done delicate! must confess I always threaten to shed a few pounds but I like my food to much - and it'd cost me a fortune for a new wardrobe haha
Seriously though, as well as all of the fab fruit and salads, if you fancy treating yourself but not too much....just ask for a half portion of whatever's on the menu or for salad instead of chips. I've not been in a restaurant yet that isn't happy to accomodate - and half portion = half price haha

have a great time

Excellent weight loss - well done! I'm on the same wagon, firmly belted in now too, I've got a very specific reason to keep it shifting and I'm on a deadline! I was determined in May not to put anything on and I succeeded. Got myself a pair of fitflops so every bit of walking helped tone bits up (my calves are toned to death, I'm just waiting for someone to invent footwear that tones the rest of me now) and we did do lots and lots of walking. Chose salads with dressing on the side, then didn't add it - something about the selection of lettuce in Turkey that is just amazing. If you're tempted by chips, ask them to leave them off your plate - they're only too happy to oblige. Most places are happy to cook how you want things if you ask - grilled instead of fried for example, you only have to make the request. I've had a grilled full english with poached eggs, keeps you full for the day and limited fat.

Keep on drinking the water though, you need it to flush everything out. I had a tip this week from a sports nutritionalist too - avoid carbs after 4pm as you don't need their energy for sleeping! Sea swimming is great, really works you out to go against the resistance. :D

Yeah, congrats on the weight loss.

My wife and I have both lost half a stone each in preperation for the hols (I am now 12 and a half stone and am quite happy with that :))

We both found on our hols in the last few years that we don't actually put any weight on whilst on holiday. We swim every day and walk whenever we can so that all helps I guess. Also, we always have a bottle of water to hand when out and about.

Although we don't go to eat healthily intentionally on holiday the food is generally much better than the take-away food we're used to here in the uk - usually all freshly prepared and less of the bad stuff like MSG etc.

Have a great time and here's to continued weightloss :D

Congratulations on your wieght loss. The only thing is, how can you even think of healthy eating with all those lovely cakes and puds available in Icmeler? Enjoy while you are there, and diet again when you get home. Have a jog around the old village after you have sinned...that will burn off the calories and keep you trim. Have a lovely holiday xx

Hey there,

Well done with your weight loss! :-)

I too, do Slimming World and on each trip to Icmeler I find that after two weeks I either stay the same or lose weight when I get weighed on my return.

with slimming world you can basically eat as much of certain foods as you like. The breakfast is great full of protein (boiled egg) and veggies (tomatoes, cucumber) - or even omlette? scrambled eggs eggs etc? Just try not to eat too much bread...

If like me the breakfast fills you up you won't need a lunch :-)

Then at dinner time - the selection is broad, lamb, chicken or fish dishes served mainly with either salads or veggies. Most dishes do seem to come with Rice and Chips.. I used to eat the rice (as it's a free food on SW) but leave my chips to one side or request no chips :-)

alchohol is the worst thing you can drink when on a diet - but in moderation is not too bad!

I think if you do a lot of walking around - maybe a walk before dinner/ or after dinner ? If you are on a first / second floor in your hotel, try walking up the stairs at least once per day rather than taking the lift (if there is one)... I was on third floor at Eda Hotel and the lift was a bit scary so took the stairs sometimes 3 times a day!! :-)) even when it was 50 degrees heat outside in June 2012!

Also if you have a good sized pool or even a small one, go for a dip and swim a few lengths... maybe at sundown....before you have a siesta to get ready to go out...

A walk up to the old village - or one end of Icmeler to the other - or even a walk to Marmaris.... !!

Anyway, that's just my 1 Lira's worth added to the pot..

good luck and enjoy the holiday......... dont' think too much about being on a diet....

There's always first thing in the morning before it gets too hot...or there is power walking :D:D As the saying goes...a little of what you fancy, and with all those lovely delights on offer, be honest, how could you resist :)

Yep, we swim every day either pool or sea (or both) and do plenty of walking. I'm hoping to have a stroll to Marmaris at least once and from where we are staying (Grand Aquarium) that's a fair walk - obviously will me making the odd stop-off for refreshments

Depending on how tired we are, we may get the water taxi back though. :)

Straight after my June jaunt I went back to weight watchers to lose a few of the pounds I'd put on from May when I last stopped going (2 holidays later and I'd put on 5.5lbs) Not bad considering one was an all inclusive and the 2nd was Icmeler where I try not to count any points.
I like to try and lose enough before I go that I don't have to worry. Yeah right, never happens but you know, I still ate what I liked and drank what I liked. The pounds are slowly shifting again now and I have one more week & one more weigh in before I'm off on another wonderful holiday.

Same for me Sami. Just one more weigh-in on Thursday, then that is it. We fly on Friday morning at 9.15 a.m. from Manchester. To date I have lost 1stone and 5lbs, hopefully when I return in three and a half weeks something will have fallen off again (ha ha ha - weight I mean!) Have a lovely holiday Sami.
