Prepaid Currency Cards

hi folks, we're flying out to Icmeler on 3rd July for our 1st visit :D

looking at currency just now, and wondering what's the best plan of action...

if I load a prepaid currency card with GBP, can I use it to withdraw Liras at any cash machine in Icmeler? will this give me a better rate than loading the card with Liras in the UK?

thanks, Gillian xx

Hi Mrscoops
I wouldnt recommended a prepay card - i got one a couple of years ago, paid to load sterling on to it and paid again to withdraw money at the atm in Icmeler - withdrawel fee and precentage(cant remember how much). I didnt have the option of loading it with lira so not sure if that makes any difference. I know most people dont recommended it but it was better for me to use my own bank card.
This year I think im going to take a combination of lira, sterling traveller cheques and english notes.
Hope this helps.

Fee :D

Hi Fee, thanks for your reply!

it was this card I was looking at http://www.ezpayltd.co.uk/escape-travel/buy-now/currency-selection/moneysupermarket-com-offer-pound-sterling/

it's free withdrawals from anywhere that has the Mastercard symbol, so I assume if I load it with GBP, I withdraw liras at the bank in questions FX rate that day? or am I misunderstanding how it works? :?

ignore my last reply - if you dig deeper, it states a £2 withdrawal fee on any transactions abroad

lira, and sterling traveller cheques it is then!

Look at the terms and conditions of the card they usually make a charge for taking cash out ! on the plus side they are safe, just as a sterling travellers cheque is . As far as I am aware there isn't a Lira card I could be proved wrong, but I find it best to take a mixture of Lira and sterling, and my bank card / credit card for emergencys. :)

I have a prepaid caxton fx card which can be loaded with sterling and there is no charge from withdrawing sterling which you can do using the HSBC ATM. Have used this very successfully in the past.
Hope this helps

I'm here. In Icmeler now, I use an Escape travel card, can load it before I come out and reload it through my bank via Internet, with draw either sterling or Lira from cash machines here but you get a better rate by withdrawing sterling and exchangeing that in the supermarkets plus if you only load it in sterling you can use it in UK if you have any left over on it. Rate last night was 2.80

Thanks for the tip Jeanette, just had a look at this and it looks like a much better option than taking travellers cheques! Free to apply, free to use, easily topped up - perfect :D
