ATMs in Icmeler - Nationwide Visa Debit Card

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has used the ATM's in Icmeler with a Nationwide Visa Debit card and had any problems? I only ask because on another forum someone said they couldn't get theirs to work, although I think they may have been using a cash + card which doesn't allow cash withdrawals or purchases abroad.
I also wondered if you withdraw sterling in Turkey, do you only get charged the £1 withdrawal fee or do you get charged the commission charge for non-sterling withdrawals as well. I was thinking not as I would be withdrawing sterling.

Any thoughts?

I used my Nationwide visa debit card maybe half a dozen times in icmeler last year with no problems, although i was withdrawing lira. I was charged a withdrawal fee plus commission but I always feel this is worthwile as I dont have to take largish sums of money with me. I hope this is of some help.

Thanks Pedro that's reassuring. I'd be interested to know what people were charged if they withdrew sterling also.

Make sure you take two cards in case one gets swallowed.

All the information for withdrawals abroad will be in the small print ! if your unsure or cant be bothered trawling just go to your bank they will tell you.

NatWest charge for withdrawls between £2.00 and £4.00

I just asked them today.

If you don't want to carry large amounts of cash, take a smaller amount to use when paying in Sterling is better than Lira....(barter bargains), and the rest in Sterling travellers cheques, They are insured against theft and replaced if stolen, easily exchanged at Bars/Resturants and at the same rate as cash. We take a cash card , but only as for emergencies due to the withdrawal charges. Do Not use exchange offices, they charge commission

There are no problems using the ATM's in Icmeler, but I would advise that you actually withdraw your money in English sterling rather than lira. If you with draw in lira then you will get charged at English Bank rate for the lira whereas if you withdraw in pounds sterling and then change in resort into lira you will get a higher exchange rate for your money.

We have a Nationwide card also, can't remember what we got charged last year for using it in the atm. We always get English money thou as you get a better exchange in the supermarkets. Never had a problem using the card.

We used to use it all the time when it was free, we always cashed it in lira, as you actually get the international bank rate which is higher than exchanging sterling.

We used it once after they changed over and added charges, with withdrawal fees and commission charges, it worked out at £3 per transaction of every £100, which worked out at £42 over the course of two weeks. We now order travellers cheques over the phone from Lloyds TSB which have no charges when ordered on the phone. You get the same exchange rate as cash, but with the added bonus of having them replaced if lost or stolen.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Laney and Reesy disagree on the sterling or lira clearly lol. Seriously though, much appreciated everyone. I had checked on the Nationwide website and it was unclear. Nationwide have replied to us today basically saying if we withdraw sterling we'll only get charged the £1 withdrawal fee and not the 2% transaction charge so I'm happy with that. Will be taking a back up card as well.
