Hi all

I was browsing Amazon yesterday for holiday books but wasn't inspired, does anyone have recommendations for a damn good holiday read? (actual books mind you, not ebooks/kindles!)....

Twenties Girl - Sophie Kinsella
Remind me again why I need a man - can't remember the author but laugh out loud and couldn't put it down..
Any Jane Green book - in particular "Straight Talking" and "Jemima J"

hmmm will continue to think and come back - I'd like some new ideas too

Depends on the type of book you like to read Allison. I'm reading Taken by Jacqui Rose just now and I can't put it down so would recommend that. Also like reading anything by Kathy Reichs and Karin Slaughter.

The kite runner

I like just about everything by Bill Bryson - he is not just a travel writer, although his travel books are very good. I can thoroughly recommend A Short History of Almost Everything. (I may have got the title slightly wrong). It is a layman's guide to all of the major sciences, with each subject given a separate chapter. Don't be put off! - it is written in a very non technical way - Bryson is not a scientist himself - and some of the things he explains are mind boggling.

As I have found, reading it and reciting some of the facts and figures to friends and family can give you an unwanted "geek" label - watch out for that

Tend to go for ChickLit, Celtic Fantasy, Crime..

I read The Kite Runner some years ago, great book....

I would recommend any Lesley Pearse books. They are great! There is a bit history, bit of romance and up to date novels. I was introduced to them at a Tynemouth Station bookstall by a lady who was an avid reader. I haven't read all her books yet but have them all. She has a new one out but the paperback isn't out until the summer. Good luck - hope you enjoy your reading

Depends what you like, me I am mainly a Steven King,Dean Koontze,Richard Laymon type of woman, I have a very big selection of books though to take with me on my kindle

My wife is an avid reader , i bought her a kindle for Xmas but she isnt that keen , prefers the tactile feel of a paperback, mstill as you say ideal for hols,

scarily realistic and so possible. Anyhthing by Kathy Reichs, Mo Hayder and the like. The Help is excellent and very easy to read too.

I'm reading James Patterson's Women's Murder Club collection at the minute, there are 10 books all together and I'm on the 6th one.

A bit of romance and crime, a good read so far!!

Also like Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Simon Beckett and Jeffrey Deaver

Mo Hayder is brilliant, the Jack Caffrey series are so good , I just cant put the book down.

tea and bee's milk is a reallly good read about a american couple who live in a turkish village near fetiye for a year, i looked in numerous bookshops but the only place i could get it was off amazon, for about £7

Mo Hayder can be a bit more graphic though can't she I love being scared though I can't sleep without light on for a few nights after

Thanks sandy, will have a look at that author. Do you recommend reading in order cos i really hate to get a book and discover that I should have read the first title first (if you know what I mean).

I seem to prefer men authors, all the very good books I have read have been written by men although The Crying Tree by Naseem Rahka is really good and will tug at your heartstrings (I am female by the way!) As a couple of members have already mentioned a very excellent book is The Kite Runner- I thought there was no better book and it was my ultimate favorite until I read the author Khaled Hosseini's other book- A Thousand Splendid Suns, this will make you cry and so beaufifully written and will leave you thinking about it for weeks. My Sister also said this is the best book she has ever read. I can't wait for his next book.
I also like Robert Goddard thrillers and his older ones you get get really cheap on Amazon or Ebay. There is a real twist to the tale and you can't put it down. I have read all of his and have not been disappointed.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is also good, Swedish author who sadly died before it got to be a best seller, sorry can't remember his name, the trilogy's to this were ok but I thought not so good as the first.
