Hand Luggage

Two of my neighbours who flew back to the UK with the company that borrowed all that money before xmas were in their own words "totally ripped off" by them on the way back to Turkey last week.

The small hand luggage case they had on the way to UK fitted in the cage thingy that measures if its ok to go on board but on the way back to Turkey this had been replaced by a smaller cage and the hand luggage would not fit into it so were fined a whopping £70 excess and had to have it put in the hold.

They asked me to post this for them so as to warn future travellers about this

I'd tell them to get on the website, check the dimensions it says on there then measure their bag. If it meets the size on the website then get complaining!

It's like another airline that is notorious for enforcing to the extreme their hand luggage size - but only on some routes, and on others you can get away with hand luggage, a handbag and a carrier of duty free!

Apparently there's a lot of this going on as companies are desperate to raise more money. Another reason to wear a travel jacket. When I next go to the airport practically all my hand luggage will be in my jacket so there's no way they can make extra charges as all I'll be carrying will be my handbag. The travel jacket won' t count as I'll be wearing it as I check in my luggage and when I board the plane.

I also read that they're also stricter on the one bag, one person, and as you board they take any excess hand luggage away from you and charge £40 per bag. It's not worth the risk. This year with my travel jacket I won't even need to take my luggage weighing scales with me.

I think that you have both missed the point here

On the way to the UK the measurement cage was one size, on the way back they changed the size of it to make it smaller so they got stuffed

Didn't miss your point John. When I said that there was a lot of it going on, I had read about this happening in different airports and funnily enough it was the same company. It is supposed to be a standard size, so if it was the right size going out, how can it possibly be the wrong size on your return journey? It was after reading about this that I decided to buy the jacket. The point I was getting at is that by 'wearing' my hand luggage there's no way they can do something like this, until they start weighing us before we get on the plane that is.

I actually saw one in use in Manchester last week

A lady with her 2 kids, European residents I think were stripping off outside Boots shops just on airside at terminal one.

She did have a bit of an audience as she started to strip off and take t shirts out of pockets etc

Not missing the point either here. They have a regulation size, it will be stated on their website. They can't just change it for a smaller one when it suits and expect people to cough up. If the size stated on their documentation fits the size of the bag that was fine on one flight, then it is also fine for the return. Therefore - complain and get a refund on the unjustified charge.
