poison alert!

Winter's here and it looks like THEY are out poisoning our animals again here in Icmeler. My beloved cat of 5 years, disappeared 5 days ago; a sweet, old turkish villager was crying the other day, when he told me his dog had been poisoned; another neighbour's cat disappeared 10 days ago. When will this stop!! Neighbours and friends here in
Icmeler beware - keep an eye on your animals.

I used the word 'THEY' because the local council (belediye) is denying putting out poison. Only today, someone told me they saw 6 dead dogs and 4 dead cats down by the canal (opp. the Majestic). I understand about culling - there are far too many street cats and the dog pound is full but at least do it humanely! I know Semin and Jan are trying their hardest with a neuturing programme. I had both my toms neutured. But it is heartbreaking. I've had sleepless nights wondering how and where my cat is - no doubt dead somewhere!

I think most people that live in
Icmeler and of course its visitors have a "favourite" dog or cat even that they may remember or see every time they come.
I don't condone what these people are doing but I just hope it is a quick death and not a lingering one but as Yvonne says there are some animals in one spot it looks like it is quick

I had a similar experience about 11 years ago around this time in
Icmeler and had to watch my dog die in the middle of the street.
No matter who is behind all this mess and what the reasons may be, its not right or justifiable in my eyes.
Here is the link for Animal Federation however after looking at their website, its not very user friendly even if you speak and understand Turkish, just that by it self tells me how far we progressed on animal rights...anyway :
http://www.haytap.org/index.php/2011042 ... federation Here is the email address and phone numbers to contact the federation about this issue, please let us know on here about the reply you (hopefully) get:

I am disgusted to hear that this is still going on, and it's not only in Icmeler.
We had 2 dogs in Kizkalesi years back. One, Tobi, was pregnant when myself and my son came back to England for a while. My husband was looking after her and she would go to the restaurant with him when he worked.
One night she went for a wander and didn't come back. She was found a few days later, dead.
She'd been poisoned, along with many other dogs and cats.
I was in Kizkalesi 3 weeks ago and noticed that there are not so many stray dogs but more pets, I hope they all survive through the winter.
Here's hoping that every one can keep a close eye on their pets and try to keep them close by at all times, although I do understand that with cats this isn't going to be easy.
It is so upsetting to think of the pain the little darlings go through.

I feel really sick and emotional to hear that cats and dogs are being poisoned in icmeler. This is not humane, I have been going to
Icmeler for 16 years twice a year, but I will not return there, absolutley disgraceful, shame on you Icmeler

The Mayor or the council or whoever it is that is changing everything and has took away the old
icmeler that we all loved has made a big mistake, does not look like icmeler anymore, changed to try to increase tourism there, don't think so, took away all the places and sights that we all loved and now found out killing cats and dogs, farewell to you Icmeler and I think all Turkey if they do the same thing animal culling, cats and dogs are not animals they are pets .... DISCRACEFUL

Just looked at the website that Rami has posted a link to and got the english version. At least they are trying to do something and encouraging people to feed dogs and cats although they are keen to keep dogs living on the streets but neutered and fed, rather than having them in compounds.I have e mailed them and will let you know if I get a reply.

this is awful . I am seriously considering retiring to
icmeler but if my pet dogs are at risk i will have to reconsider. Any animal suffering is appalling but poisioning much loved pets is despicable. Would not take a risk with my dogs safety part of my imagined joy of living in icmeler is having the freedom to take my dogs for long walks in the village and surrounding mountains.

I have a dog too lechy - I just train her not to go mooching around the bins and keep her on the lead until I get to the beach. Some dog owners here, put muzzles on their dogs when we hear about pets going missing, or poisoned. Unfortunately, I can't do that to my cats - and my special one is still missing a week on. Life out here, esp in the Winter is wonderful. Don't let this put you off.

After visiting
Icmeler in June and taking over some treats and collars etc for the dogs home i feel very upset and angry to read this post . After all the hard work a lot of people are doing there to help these lovely animals we now here of this horrible poisoning going on . I do understand there is a problem with strays but honestly felt with the dogs home opening and seeing so many people with pets whilst on holiday that things were improving and that Icmeler was an animal loving resort . It must be so worrying now for the people who love there pets and live there .I feel so sad about this and unfortunately has changed my opinion of Icmeler for the worse.
