Just a heads up for parents with children with mobile phones

We have noticed so many teenagers walking around with mobile phones, chatting away to friends or on Facebook in a non wifi area. So please just ensure your children are aware, as I fear there will be a few shocked parents when they get home!!'

I had a shock today when I checked my phone bill, on the day before leaving Turkey my phone couldn't have been locked properly, 4 calls were made in quick succession only amounting to a few seconds - less than a minute, and it added an extra £17 to my bill.

I had been so careful all holiday about the amount of texting etc I had done, and I never used WAP, just WIFI.......lessons learned though, check your phone is OFF

My mates have just got back from holiday and got a huge bill of approx 800 pounds. Turns out there son had been using his i-phone to listen to music for the 3 weeks that they were on holiday and although he didn't use the phone or text anyone he didn't know to switch off the roaming device on his phone, so every time he switched it on the the phone went straight on to the internet. You would think that if a phone bill was getting unusually high the phone company would send you a text to let you know.

Personally I think all the WAP, calling and texting should automatically be off on any phone, and if you do want access to these facilities, it would be a better idea to phone them up and ask them to be activated.

It would definitely save extortionate bills like your mates just had

I am with 3 mobile and they have a maximum amount allowed which is £45.00 It is time other networks had a capped amount instead of people getting huge bills.

I've already blocked my phones ability to accept incoming calls whilst roaming to ensure I don't have any unwanted calls that I end up paying for. If anyone wants me they can text!

I won't be making any calls whilst we're there, just a few texts. Basically I only want my phone as a clock when I'm on holiday

We got caught out with the roaming thing last year. Daughter was warned not to be making lots of calls or sending texts while we were there, and she didn't - but we still arrived home to find a huge bill, because her iPhone was constantly updating things like Facebook etc. I kicked up a huge fuss with O2 and they eventually reduced the bill. She's off to Ayia Napa this weekend, but the iPhone is staying at home and she's bought a cheap £10 mobile just so she can stay in touch. It's not just making or receiving calls or texts - unless you go into your settings and manually turn off the roaming, it will keep connecting to update things.

Do you know how to do that Blondie? As I said I've disabled incoming calls and once we leave Stansted I'll disable outgoing calls too plus I'm going to opt out of Facebook mobile so I won't be getting anything from them but if there's some way of switching all roaming off then I'd rather do that and just switch it back on if/when I text. xx

I don't unfortunately, Janey - because it's my daughter who has the iPhone, not me. I think you have to go into your settings and turn off data roaming.

Janey, I have an iphone and thanks to some on here I learned about Data roaming costs etc and made sure mine was off when I was on holiday. Go to Settings, then General, then Network and then you will see the Data Roaming which you can then switch off.

Thanks Blondie and Chocoholic. Mines a Nokia E5 not iPhone though. I've had a look into it and can get as far as 'Network' but there isn't anything about roaming in there. I think I'd best dig out the instruction manual and try to find it, if indeed I need to, not really sure, lol!

Janey- if you go to a shop whose network you are with they will be happy to help you out. My friend is with Orange and she is not very good with phones (or any gadgets!) and although she didn't buy her phone from the Orange shop she has often been in for help and they were happy to explain everything, the same with me at the 02 shop when I got my iphone (not from them) and they were happy to help- with me it was just the once though- my friend is a regular visitor"

I've just had a look through the book and also online and I think I'm ok now so long as I bar incoming and outgoing calls and disable Facebook mobile. And then NEVER use my phone while we're away, lol!

Glad you are sorted Janey, must be horrific to be landed with a huge bill or to have all your credit used. I always am well topped up with credit for my holiday in case of emergencies.

Make sure u phone your provider an work out how to turn the answer phone off too!!
As u can turn your phone onwhile away and jut turn on 3G to accept texts but that will also accept voicemails, which will cost a fortune!!'

Same. Mine will be used for a text to my parents when we've landed one to hubby to let him know what time to expect us once we've sorted our transfer from Dalaman and hopefully that's it.
Other than that my phone will be a clock/alarm, calculator and translator, that's it
I can't imaging how awful it must be to get an unexpected whopping bill after enjoying a holiday, talk about down to earth with a bump!
