Beware excess baggage Dalaman

We returned last Saturday and we were just 1 kg over and they charged us for it, it costs £8 per kg. There was our flight to Cardiff, one to Bristol and one to Gatwick and there were dozens of people queing up to pay the excess. One woman was 9kg over and got charged £72.

I have flown quite a lot over the years and their willingness to charge for just 1 kg shows to me they are strictly enforcing the rules, beware.

We purchased some digital scales too. A few years ago we travelled in a party of 8 and got stung for excess. Never again!

I always weigh my suitcase on one of the empty baggage scales before I get in the que.Never been over as I leave all shower gels, suntan lotion, etc. Yes they were checking hand luggage when I came back beginning of July.There were some young girls in front of me with soaking wet Beach towels, so its not rocket science to know that they are going to be very heavy !!!! Just be sensible about your luggage

Check with your particular airline, but for many it's 5kg.

Thanks, never bothered to check carry on but better safe than sorry. And it gives me more reasons to tell our daughter that she can't take her

I don't really see a problem with paying excess baggage. I love to shop at the markets etc and get lovely stuff (even if they are designer fakes some are really nice) for a fraction of the price that you would here. People want cheap flights and that's what they get, don't forget the more weight on a plane the more fuel they use and £8 a kilo in my opinion is reasonable. When you look at the price of air fares on the charter airlines compared to rail fares here in the UK then the flights are very good value. Many think nothing of spending lots of money on alcohol which over a week or two adds up so why worry about excess baggage cost? Sorry guy's but I really don't know what the fuss is about.

That's a fair point. Everything has been paired down to the bare minimum now and you pay for anything extra. That works in your favour if the weight limits are enough for you. Many travellers carry their own entertainment systems rather than rely on in-flight movies, and as for food, well I can manage for 4hrs without save for a drink or two.

I do wish that the authorities would take control of the ridiculous seat pitches though. Not only must it be very bad for your circulation being hemmed in like you are, but it can't be great for safety should you ever need to evacuate. Regardless of the extra costs, I think they ought to ensure that everyone of average height can at least sit down without having their knees crushed against the seat in front.

Even on a hop across the channel it can be very uncomfortable, but for a 4hr leg to Turkey it's almost intolerable.

The fuel per kilo for luggage doesn't stack up - you have children paying for seats the same price as adults but the weight of a child is nowhere near an adults weight. A few lb/kilo's in baggage wouldn't make any difference to the fuel.

Its just a money making exercise as they know tourists are willing to pay.

Money making exercise -almost certainly yes. But you can't have ever lower flight costs without them looking to make money in other areas. And at least with excess baggage you have the choice.

I often wonder how they manage to calculate take-off weight when the passengers can be of such varying sizes. If you're 8st and get charged for being 2kg's over on your baggage it may seem a little unfair when the next passenger could be twice the weight but under the excess baggage limit

And as for kids being charged less, that has always seemed odd to me. Unless they're sat on your lap they're taking up just as much room as an adult. My daughter has just tripped over the line in the sand and we had to pay full price for her this year.

I'll never cease to be surprised at how many people can arrive at the check-in desks with very over weight bags. It isn't hard to weigh them and most of the places I have stayed have weighing scales you can use to check to be safe.

I also agree with the above post, is a good point. Why should someone who is not overweight be charged the same as those who are. When you think about this it does seem ridiculous as someone who is 9 stone or under but a few kilo's over in baggage the overall weight of passenger and baggage would be much less than someone obese who is below the baggage limit.
To be honest am surprised Mike O'Leary hasn't started weighing passengers and charging excess baggage if you are not skinny!

Excess baggage charges are a voluntary fee. It's simplicity itself to make sure your bag isn't overweight.
Last year in Dalaman we were delayed in the queue while a couple who were a few kg over demanded to be allowed to board without charge. Perhaps the rule should have applied to others but not them. I'm not quite clear on that. The woman at the desk stood no nonsense, after a couple of minutes she gave them the option of paying or leaving the queue.
They paid & we cheered.

TC are £12 extra per kilo so be careful
also at dalaman they are very strict in enforcing the rules when it comes to baggage

Dont understand how passengers have excess baggage,to be honest people take far to much with them on holiday clothing, shoes etc. How many people come back with clothes and shoes they have not warn, we always come home with things from Turkey and never have been over going out or coming back .its knowing how to pack your suitcase and being sensible with what things you take and bring back. Everyone should know what weight the baggage allowance is before they go,if your over then unfortunatly you have to pay up.

I always take a lightweight jacket with me with plenty of pockets. If near the limit I put a number of things in the pockets. You just put small things that are relatively heavy in the pockets remembering that you can't carry liquids. Your jacket isn't counted as hand luggage yet
