The ignorance of some holidaymakers

Postby BlueNose » 28 Jul 2011 21:16

As the guys try to get you to come in for dinner etc and i know they are not allowed to hassle you but they've got to try to a degree.

We like to sit as close to the road as you can get chatting and partake in some banter with them, then you see how rude some people are when walking past, rude comments ,cheek etc.

We found them very entertaining and got on well with a lot of them, who always remember you everytime you go past.

A couple of sentences won't hurt , common manners even.

Foreigners and Brits included.

Shame people are like that , even on holiday. :(

I agree - it can be annoying if you feel you're being hassled, but there's still no need to be downright rude to people. As you say, manners cost nothing and a bit of common courtesy can go a long way.

Have to agree mate. First time we went in 2008 the hassle was worse, but to me it was part of the holiday, didn't look at is as hassle. We ate a lot in the Baron (valentinos) as was not there now, but people on here will love or totally hate that guy at the front of house, to me he was a very good friend and the food was incredible. I was bought up to show good manners and I can't stand gobby gits with no respect.

Yes, I agree, it is nice always to be polite and just walk on if hassled BUT please may I add that it works both ways- it hasn't happened often but I have actually been insulted by the waiters doing the hassling when I have been a perfect lady, not all gents are (gentlemen that is!) I have also seen others been insulted and put down. This is very much in the minority and everyone in every country in the world can not be nice wherever you are but as I said it does work both ways.

on a plus note, Omar from aysima who is front of house is totally hilarious , my missus was in stitches at his "life story" speech that every new customer gets.

Listening to him converse to the punters of an evening was entertainment enough

I always find a polite no thank you, or I have just eaten does the trick too.

I was rudely insulted once, by that horrible man who was at the Baran/Valentino's - and the thing is I would probably have gone in there for a meal if it wasn't for his really nasty, rude attitude. Needless to say that place NEVER got my custom, not even for a bottle of water

I agree about the guy at Baran- after repeated times day after day having no sucess luring me in he said he didn't like the holidaymakers but he liked our money! I said he wouldn't be seeing any of mine.
A simple greeting and no hassle as I am passing makes me want to eat/drink at a restaurant but any hassle or rudeness at all and I will never go in.

Same here with regards to the guy at the Baran/Valentino - his attitude meant we've never been in the place. I wish people like him would realise that hassling people in that way is counter-productive, because all it does it put you off going in!

Normally when going out we have a rough idea what restaurants we are going to try and I must admit after the 7th or 8th restaurant I have walked past and said a polite no thanks to I get fed up and stop saying anything but I don't class my self as rude or ignorrant for doing so.

I do stop for the ocassional chat if its a restaurant that is of interest to us as I have either read reviews or it's been recommended, I have made some good acquanitances over the years, but I do tend to stop more on the way back to the apartment, you can then take a relaxed look at the menu and don't feel as pressured.

The only person I have ever been rude to is the man at the Baron a few years ago but he deserved it and there is a post about it on the forum somewhere.

i agree with Dave here. it does start to get on ye nerves. you find people start to avoid walking down some streets. i dont mind to much and usually say no thanks. some times the banter is funny tho. if they go to shake your hand dont cos they wont let go. i hate that. the worst one was in marmaris. a guy actually stepped in front of me stopping me dead in my tracks and said why you not try my resturaunt. guess what, i never went in and never would!!

I agree that a polite 'no thanks' is all that is called for.
Some people walk past and say nothing at all, it costs nothing to be polite.
We have been for many years, when the hassle was worse but we never saw it as hassle just banter and sometimes i miss it as i think it added to the atmosphere and you knew you were in turkey.
