Has anyone encountered problems exchanging Scottish notes ?

I would recommend that you get all your scottish notes put into english or withdraw your money out of an english bank before you go.Best to be on the safe side.Definately you dont get such a good exchange rate for scottish notes

yes have had problems in the past changing northern irish notes always change to english now. in fact when i get an english note during the year it goes in the "Turkey fund".

I think last year the exhange shops were giving 2.1 Lira per Scottish pound compared to 2.31 for an English version, The supermarkets won't touch them.

i aint taking any scottish notes, i went into the bank and ask for ££ in english notes, no bother at all.

OR use a barclays ATM here and they spit out english notes.

Aye, in London, Luton, Aylesbury and St. Albans but never in Turkey as I never take them apart from last year when a waiter was happy to take a Scottish fiver as a tip when I had run out of change.

Really,really annoys me though that they don't take Scottish notes or you get much less for your money..always been a bug bear of mines

Really, really annoys me when people talk about English notes as they don't exist! It's sterling, and they're our currency as well, in Wales. Rant over

Thanks everyone. I share all the frustrations about lack of recognition and poorer exchange rate just because it
is a different bank note.

I had a problem getting English notes, hence the question - the bank teller I was at only had £50 in English notes, which really surprised me. He said they were like "hen's teeth". So will shop around and collect them where I can get them and will use the Barclays ATM suggestion. We are flying from Manchester this time, so it should be easier to get some from the ATMs there too.

Anyway, this is our first trip to Turkey, and all we have heard are good reports so far, so really looking forward to it.

The term English and Scottish notes was a short form reference for the notes produced by the Bank of England and those produced by the various Scottish banking institues (Clydesdale, Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland).

I know that Wales ceased producing their own bank notes in the early 1900s, whereas Scotland has continued to produce its own notes since 1695. Northern Ireland Banks also produce their own currency notes. Whereas in most countries, currency notes are produced by the Government or Central Bank, the UK permits each country to produce their own if they wish. I believe Hong Kong is similar.

You are correct - all notes are Sterling and should have the same exchange rate, however, like it or not, in practice, many countries will not recognise or accept Scottish bank notes or they will offer a lower exchange rate. There is no justification or reason for this. I have no idea how Norther Ireland Bank notes are treated.

I was simply clarifying the position for Scottish bank notes in Turkey - no offence was intended by using the short form reference.

You have to wonder what will happen if wee Alec, the big fish, wins the referendum. Will we be paupers abroad, will the Turks let is in with our shiny new banknotes, or will it only be the rich, oil sheiks who will be able to travel?

In the meantime, in a wee toon like mine, I have to hoard Bank of England notes when I get them or exchange oor ain siller for them in my bowling club.

No offence taken at all. I totally agree with you that the Scottish notes should not be treated differently and especially cannot understand why Scottish notes are not accepted for the entry visa or why you get a lower exchange rate.

All I was pointing out was that it is annoying when people refer to 'English' money when it is not only the currency of England, it is ours in Wales as well. The notes are printed in England but the coins are minted here in the Royal Mint in South Wales, so it is a joint effort

We all have little things that annoy us and this just happens to be one of mine. To be honest though as long as I get the rate that is given at the moment in Icmeler you can call it anything you like

We fly out in a week and it looks as if the rate is going to stay around the same for at least the next couple of weeks, hopefully for much longer with a bit of luck

Although I am Scottish but live in Northern Ireland, our money here in NI is not accepted either " yes it's sterling as well" but not only not taken in Turkey but most of the mainland UK don't take it either.

I think the main reason why Scottish notes are not taken in Turkey is that they are not classed as legal tender

I cannot understand why anybody is arguing about the term "English notes" - it actually says "Bank of England" printed on them, in bold, so infact, they are called English notes.

yes as someone already stated scottish bank notes are produced privately and are therefore not legal tender
therefore they are not a valid form of currency which needs to be accepted
turkey is therefore valid in rejecting them
a lot of places in icmeler and marmaris will change scottish notes but at a much much lower rate so just get them changed before going

Just back from Icmeler and quite a few of the official exchange offices were advertising exchange rates for Scottish notes - but at a much lower rate than sterling. For instance, one day, they were offering 2.58TL to the £, but only 2.3 for Scottish pounds.

How confusing for everyone though..........
All Bank of England, Scottish and Northern Irelandcurrency is legal.
BUT no bank note is legal tender in Scotland.
AND Bank of England notes are only legal tender in England and Wales, not in Scotland.
AND in any situation any note is only accepted by agreement, so most of them are accepted anyway.
.... and we could go on.0

How do we expect any country to treat us equally, if our own current (UK) system is confusing

Well rather than go to war or even Devolution simply based on the confusion of the UK curency system, bank currency or tender, I will take Turkish Lira, Bank of England notes,some Euros an ATM card and a smile .

FYI: We got 2.49 tl exchange with Tesco money shop a few days ago.
