Hi duck

I would suggest you take a mixture of sterling travellers cheques, english notes and a small amount of lira to get you through the first few hours (you'll get a better exchange rate in resort than in the UK).

I've heard that some travel agencies that also sell and buy holiday money are advising people to change sterling into Euros or dollars for Turkey and take euro cheques - not worth the bother.... stick to good old sterling.

Make sure you hire a safety deposit box at your accommodation when you arrive, they only ususally cost £10 a week and are worth having for the peace of mind!

Hope this helps

I'd probably take £1400 in sterling travellers cheques and cash up a couple of hundred at a time (I just think if they get lost or stolen they'll be quickly replaced) the rest in english and say £50-£80 in lira.

If you change your cheques in a change office you will need to present your passport, but after you've changed cheques for the first time you'll normally be given a card which they'll write your name and passport number on so you just present this card the next time you change cheques with them - which makes life much easier as you don't have to worry about carrying your passport around with you all the time.

Some bars/restaurants and shops will also change cheques or english money for you at good rates.

Take plenty of english notes with you if you're going to the weekly market in Icmeler or Marmaris as you'll see loads of things marked up "3 for a tenner"
