We found a few words of Turkish are always appreciated - even if your pronunciation does prompt a few laughs. Even a "merhaba" when walking around the old village brings friendly smiles from the locals. Going to try to use a few more this year...cue more giggles, no doubt!

A very good word to know is "Arkadaşım" which means "My Friend"

A useful one is 'param yok'. Means - no money/I'm skint.

gorusuruz (say "sh" for the s!)- see you later
iyi aksamlar (sh again!) - good evening

Three years ago one of the waiters in Angels, now closed, would not let me pass without saying that 'I have a lovely, white, Scottish moustache.' Thinking about it, although it's now closed, I can pass by without trying to remember the words that went along with biyik, iskocyali and beyaz.

I think "Kolay Gelsin" is something you can say to the shop keepers and sales people, means "good luck with the sales" or similar and Güzel Kaltsu ( don't know how to spell it!) was supposed to mean "nice ass".... ( daughter was taught this...)

I downloaded a Rosetta Stone free application for my android phone, would be really great for beginners. This gives you basics, it consists of words like, Dont worry, Good Bye etc, then there is a numbers page, and also a Travel page, which gives you sentences asking where is the beach, airport, toilet etc.

I forgot to add, this application is something you can read and listen to, therefore it gives you the correct pronunciation too

A few years ago we took a group of 13 of us to Icmeler. Ages ranged from 16 - 59. One of my dad's work mates came along with us and had never been to Turkey before. As a huge travel fan he was really keen to learn some Turkish while in a new country. Dad's mate Nick was up a for a giggle so we thought we'd have a laugh with him.

Nick decided that he wanted to have a go on a Jet Ski while down on the beach one day. Before he went off we taught/told him that Keçiler geliyor meant 'Thank You'. Any way Nick went off for his jet ski ride and at the end thought he would show his appreciation by saying Thank You in Turkish. As we were sat just up the beach from where Nick was, we fell around in fits of laughter as did the Jet Ski man as Nick had just told him that 'the goats are coming' - we let this roll on for a few days before we told him why we fell about laughing. So for those of you that want something funny 'Keçiler geliyor' means the Goats are Coming.

Also just while I think of it...

Sen Deli Ben Deli Sen Ben Den Deli means your crazy, i'm crazy but your more crazy than me.
