Sterling or Lira??

Postby xsam25x » 05 May 2011 13:10

Hi Guys... Well 2 more sleeps for me and i shall be on my way on Saturday! am soo excited now and looking forward to seeing Turkey for the 1st time! :)

Just a quick question i have been told that you can spend Sterling most places over there, is this the same in bars/resteraunts or just for clothes etc??. Also does it work any different (cheaper/more expensive) either way??.

Thanks for ya help, and am looking forward to arriving even more after reading all the posts on here!

Lucky you Sam ive still got 3 weeks to go.
You can use sterling in most places, but only English £10 notes. You can pay with your debit/credit cards in Restaurants and most shops, but you can withdraw money from ATMs in the square. Im with the Royal Bank and they dont charge.
You will absolutley love the place. This will be my 9th time in Turkey, 7 in Icmeler.
People so friendly, food/drink/scenerey/ beaches all first class.
Can you tell i like it?? lol.
Where are you staying?? Jacky aka fifegirl

Just take a small amount of lira then change your sterling over there. It`s better rate of exchange and can be changed in all the little supermarkets where there is no commision.Everywhere accepts sterling though.Enjoy your hols. Jim

RBS debit cards are one of Martin Lewis's "cards from hell" - they take 2.75% commission off the interbank exchange rate plus you get charged £1.25 for every Point of Sale transaction and a 2% charge, minimum £2 maximum £5, if you use an ATM.

Thanks for the replys..

Im actually staying in Marmaris Jacky.. but my brother is staying in Icmeler at the same time so we will be going across a few times during our stay!! Plus i have heard the beach in Icmeler is better than Marmaris :)

Yes i can tell you like it but I always say if you like somewhere why go somewhere else and risk being disappointed when you get there!

I think im just going to get a small amount of Liras changed here then take sterling and prob get that changed over there! Just gotta finish my packing tomorrow and i will be all ready for the off! just hope the sun is shining when we get there!

Thanks again, Sam

I have to agree with Katie, change your money in the supermarkets where you can ask the rate and compare to others then spend your lira in the restaurants, I've been slightly stung once over there using sterling in a restaurant, If I had changed my cash in the supermarket I could have had a nother couple of beers for the same £ value.

I should add however that many restaurants display their exchange rate and those that do tend to offer a good rate, if using £ in a restaurant ask the rate before you sit down if it's not displayed.
